1981 Domaine Durroux 44 Year Old "K&L Exclusive" Single Barrel No. 5 Mauléon-d’Armagnac Bas-Armagnac (700ml)
This wonderful under-the-radar estate was identified by the same wonderful people who brought us the last few lots of Lasgraves. While they're not similar per se, the aesthetic of hidden gems and lost treasures applies. This old-school estate is producing many things, but the old Armagnacs are all Baco. I love it. Let's try the '81! The color is a stupendous, luscious auburn (1.5). The nose is a perfect picture of rancio: old leather, tobacco leaf, sweet plum sauce, polished antique mahogany, oyster sauce. On the palate it's absolutely juicy, and while powerful tannins are evident, they've softened and opened. Dense red fruit, tense exotic black tea, Gauloise Original mélange, medium-bodied and absolutely gorgeous. If you're looking for something really powerful and complex, the '81 is the obvious choice.

Notes
The beautiful Domaine in Mauleon-d’Armagnac will soon be a familiar name among serious brandy lovers around the world. Hidden in the heart of Bas Armagnac, this small family estate has been quietly distilling and aging its own brandy for more than four decades without a word of recognition beyond the local trade and the occasional mention in an agricultural fair program. Jean-Marc Durroux, whose family has worked this land for generations, continues the traditional methods of his ancestors with care and patience. Using a small column alembic and 100% Baco grapes, he produces a style of Armagnac that is both powerful and refined. From the ancient cellars of the Domaine, we selected four extraordinary barrels, each representing a different facet of this hidden gem. Of those, the 1981 vintage stood above the rest for its concentration, richness, and depth. Dark in color and heavily influenced by long aging in local Gascon oak, it offers aromas of roasted walnuts, dark cocoa, vanilla bean, and dried fruit with an undercurrent of rancio and polished wood. On the palate, it shows tremendous intensity balanced by a long, savory finish. Bottled entirely for K&L without reduction or chill-filtration, this cask-strength Armagnac represents the most robust and expressive side of this remarkable Domaine.
