The 20222 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain L'Exceptionne is Gamay and Pinot Noir picked together from 94-year-old vines planted by Clothilde Lafarge's great-grandfather. It has wonderful transparency on the nose: red cherries mixed with raspberry. The palate leans more towards the Pinot Noir, with fine delineation, gentle grip and ample tension on the finish. A strong follow-up to the excellent 2021.(NM)

94 year old vine, coming from the same vintage as Michel Lafarge. Mid crimson red. A very attractive red berry fruit on the nose, nothing dramatic, not speaking especially of either grape. Refines in the glass. Pinot flavours with gamay’s more acidic structure in the glass, but an unusual wealth of fruit. Very good example Drink from 2025-2028. Tasted Dec 2023.

Ripe, peppery and expressive aromas include those of mostly red berries and soft earth. There is excellent verve to the not especially dense middleweight flavors that retain good detail on the wonderfully refreshing, complex, balanced and lingering finish. This is excellent for its level and worth considering.*Burghound Outstanding Top Value!*

The 2022 Bourgogne Passetoutgrain l'Exception exhibits notes of sweet berries, plums and cherries, followed by a medium-bodied, fleshy and succulent palate. The 2022 vintage was showing well during my annual barrel tasting chez Lafarge, emphasizing the charming, pretty side of the year. The team began picking on August 26, another early harvest. As usual, reds were destemmed, in some cases manually, and élevage is taking place in predominantly used barrels, with the Lafarge's habitual racking with aeration. The result is wines with a resolutely old-school style that have a good track record of evolving gracefully in the cellar.(WK)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "‘Over 80 years old, co-planted half pinot, half gamay grapes always maturing at the same time, in the commune of Volnay near Meursault. Grandfather first commercialised this.’ Pretty red fruits with a lively energy – that’s a lovely start. Melting over the palate in delicious style. With fine length and energy."(09/2024)
