Ruby crimson in colour. Gentle and graceful aromatics. The firmer structure of this wine is apparent in the mouth, though there is enough pure red berry fruit to cover the bones. Undemonstrative yet harmonious and balanced. Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Dec 2023.

Burghound

Note: from a mix of vines that average about 40 years of age in Brouillard, Buttes, Famines, Pasquiers and Cros Martin. Spicier aromas of poached plum, dark currant, violet and a hint of crushed fennel are rimmed in more subtle wood influence. Once again there is a really lovely texture to the more mineral-inflected medium-bodied flavors that possess a caressing mouthfeel, all wrapped in a firm, punchy, lightly austere and equally well-balanced finale. Lovely and understated.*Burghound Outstanding!*

Vinous

A blend of six parcels spread around the appellation, the 2022 Volnay Village has a well-defined and quite Pommard-like nose. The palate is medium-bodied, quite robust for a Volnay, and grippy with a slightly muscular but focused finish. A gutsy Volnay in the making, and as such, it will require 3-4 years in bottle. It may land at the top of my banded score. (NM)

The 2022 Volnay Village offers up aromas of cherries, dark berries and spices, followed by a medium-bodied, youthfully chewy palate that lacks the depth and integration of the Vendanges Selectionées. (WK) The 2022 vintage was showing well during my annual barrel tasting chez Lafarge, emphasizing the charming, pretty side of the year. The team began picking on August 26, another early harvest. As usual, reds were destemmed, in some cases manually, and élevage is taking place in predominantly used barrels, with the Lafarge's habitual racking with aeration. The result is wines with a resolutely old-school style that have a good track record of evolving gracefully in the cellar.(WK)

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "No ‘Selectionée’ this year – all is in hereDirectly more fragrant and floral – yes! Darker fruit intertwines with the structure – super depth of flavour here with a creamy accent. First class!"(09/2024)
