2022 Halcon Estate Yorkville Highlands Syrah
95
James Suckling
Review Date: 01/2025Perfumed aromas of blackberries, boysenberries, dried herbs, cured meat and violets. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with firmly framed tannins and balanced acidity, giving flavors of cassia bark, plums and graphite. A very pure and focused syrah with some Old World charm. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Syrah is a gorgeous wine. The bad news is that two severe frost events wiped out nearly the entire crop. As a result, the total production is a whopping 55 cases. Citrus peel, white pepper, cinnamon and red fruit build in a layered, silky, super-expressive Syrah. (AG)
Staff Reviews

Here's a tragic but somewhat fortuitous story. We have long been huge fans of the Halcon wines. We've been championing them for 10+ years. The prior owners Paul and Jackie Gordon were almost like family here at K&L, buying almost as much wine from us as we did from them! When they decided to sell the property and move back to the UK, it was totally fitting that Pax Mahle and Baron Ziegler bought the property to write its next chapter. We also had a rich history with both those producers, Pax's wines have long featured on our shelves and website through various iterations. Baron's projects such as Banshee, Marine Layer, Averaen, Valravn are benchmark wines that we know and love. We were excited to see what these two masterminds could do with a vineyard that had already proven itself as one of the premier Syrah sites in the country. With the inaugural release of the 2021 vintage under new ownership, the wine was showered with acclaim and high scoring critical reviews. However, in the spring of 2022 a severe and brutal frost event decimated the vineyard. This high elevation site (2,500ft) can be risky, and the damage was beyond 90% of the entire crop. What shoots survived produced just less than one ton of fruit from the entire 15 acre estate. Only 55 cases were made, down from 750 the prior vintage. Knowing they had to focus on rehabbing the vineyard and building the market for future vintages, Halcon come to us with an incredible offer, the chance to take the entire 2022 vintage off their hands and offer it out to our Wine Club members at an incredible price. And that is how a tragedy of natures doing can result in a once in a generation opportunity for folks that are in the know. The wine itself delivers everything we've come to know and love about Halcon - powerful, focused dark fruit, crushed violets, wild mountain chaparral, peppery spices, graphite, hot stone, seared meat. After the club orders have been filled, there will be a scant few cases of the vintage to go around so don't be shy about snapping up extra bottles if you enjoy the wine!
