Review Date: 03/2026

A complex and restrained traditional wine with aromas of licorice, embers, dried red cherries, potpourri, eucalyptus, tar, minerals, quinine and bark. Full-bodied with firm and dusty tannins. It’s a bit angular yet ripe and savory, with long, refreshing acidity and a full-flavored finish showing vermouth-like richness. (AF)

The 2022 Barbera d'Alba pours a deeper shade of magenta and is pretty, ripe, and inviting, with layered aromas of pressed violets, blackberries, fresh earth, and mocha. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with a ripe yet fresh feel, and retains snappy brightness and crunchy fruit, even in this warm and dry vintage. While the warmth and concentration of the vintage are present, this is a very well-managed and successful Barbera with a lot to enjoy over the coming 10-12 years. (AF)

The 2022 Barbera d'Alba marries the richness of the year with the classicism that runs through all these wines at this address. Succulent red cherry/plum fruit, spice, leather, menthol and blood orange fill out the layers. Soft contours wrap it all together. (AG)

Notes

The 2022 Barbera d’Alba is a sophisticated and soulful red that masterfully balances the inherent richness of a warm vintage with the estate’s signature "stern" traditionalism. Sourced from the San Lorenzo vineyard in Barolo, this wine is aged for roughly 20 months in old, large botti to ensure the purity of the fruit remains the protagonist. The nose is deep and expressive, offering a concentrated bouquet of dark cherries, plums, and violets underscored by nuanced layers of leather, sweet spices, and menthol. On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied and succulent, where a velvety richness of fruit is perfectly delineated by bright, refreshing acidity and glossy, dusty tannins. The finish is long and persistent, marked by a savory mineral snap and a lingering touch of blood orange and dried herbs. A remarkably "complete" Barbera that avoids the heavy-handedness often found in the variety, offering both immediate pleasure and the structural integrity to evolve beautifully in the cellar.
