All estate-grown cabernet sauvignon fruit; the breakdown this year from the Elderton vineyards in Craneford (52%) and Nuriootpa (58%). Aged in predominantly older French oak puncheons for 16 months. Deep crimson with a purple edge and opulent aromas of rich blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of dark spice, cedar, vanillin, purple floral tones, crème de cassis and a mere whiff of scattered herbs. Impressive fruit and tannin ripeness and a lovely blackberry/blackcurrant pastille finish. (DB)

Aromas of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries, crushed stone and suede. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Juicy and fresh with some black tea character. Chewy finish.

This shapely 2021 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon delivers appreciable concentration with poise, opening up with bright blackberry and blueberry aromas entwined with seamless spicy oak. There is a good density of flavor. Al-dente tannins add shape and structure for enjoyment over the medium term. (AH)

The 2021 Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon smells of autumn leaves and forest floor, cassis, bramble, tobacco and dried mint. In the mouth, black olives, gravel, roasted beets and crushed rocks rule the roost. It's a big wine, with little evidence of the cool season that birthed it. Lots going on! 14.9% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. (EL)

Notes

Elderton is a family-owned winery in the heart of South Australia’s Barossa Valley, managed by the Ashmead family. Located in the township of Nuriootpa, along the banks of the Para River, the vines on the property were first planted in 1894 by early German settlers who were the first arrivals in this part of Australia. In 1916, it was purchased by Samuel Elderton Tolley who built a house on the property and named the estate “Elderton”. By the 1970s, the estate had fallen into disrepair and was sold to Neil and Lorraine Ashmead, who were primarily looking for a house to raise their family in but also took on the 72 acres of vineyards that came along with the property. The Ashmead family worked to salvage and restore the old vine vineyards, first releasing wine under the Elderton label in 1982. The second generation, Cameron and Allister, took the reins of the business in 2003 and today work alongside their wives, Jules and Rebecca, to run Elderton Wines. The 2021 Elderton Estate Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of fruit from Elderton’s estate owned vineyards in Nuriootpa and Craneford and is aged in mostly neutral French oak barrels for 18 months in order to showcase the fruit profile and distinctive Barossa terroir. Rich and full-bodied, this is a bold expression of New World Cabernet Sauvignon.
