2024 MarBeso "Magic Hour" Santa Barbara County Skin Fermented Vermentino - Gruner Veltliner (Orange Wine)
92
James Suckling
Bruised wild-strawberry aromas are botanically expressive with juniper and hibiscus. Bitter oranges and drying flowers are reminiscent of Italian herbal liqueur, with white radishes through the finish. Savory and bracing. Drink now.

Email AaronI'm a confused person. I kind of roll my eyes and wrinkle my nose a lot of times at some natty wines and some orange wines, but I also often end up reviewing them positively. Orange wines for me are one of those things that are kind of more of an experience than just a beverage, and this one isn't an exception, but it is exceptional. The nose is rich and round, with a handful of white flowers throwing into the mix as well. I'm sure it's just the color and my mind, but there's definitely some orange zest in there, as well as peaches and nectarines all kind of in a white-flower based perfume, but also delicious. The palate has a little bit of grip and some slight bitterness from the skin contact, but the fruit is really nice and juicy in it, there's peaches, nectarines, a little apricot, some lemon and orange pith, and then a little bit of the white flower coming back in at the end. This is really a fun wine that would be great on a picnic and with some kind of charcuterie and cheese plate, or maybe just something simple like sandwiches. This is also a wine you and some friends could sit around a table and sip on for a couple hours while you discuss what you find in it and how it makes you feel.
