Entrancing on the nose thanks to alternating wafts of warm earth, spiced plums and wildflowers. There is notable extract here framed by long and slightly angular tannins. Bustling acidity reinforces the tannin texture for now, but there is ample girth, muscle and class for this to all be absorbed in time. Give this sturdy wine at least a decade. This is just under (0.98) a hectare planted two-thirds in 1912 and the remainder in 1972.

Very deep and dark with enormous complexity, aromas ranging from red berries to licorice, wet earth and forest floor. This shows enveloping richness and incredibly fine tannins but also a wonderful freshness, giving great precision and clarity as it rolls over you in one huge wave.

The Clos de Bèze from Bruno Clair boasts an immense plummy ripe fruit character with notes of earth and spice; there is a slightly reduced character at this stage but this will easily resolve with time and does not tarnish the lustrous fruit. The texture of the wine on the palate shows intense concentration and structure, and yet the overall impression is of a wine that is complete and round. The grapes are from nearly a hectare of the Clos de Bèze; two thirds of this was first planted more than 100 years ago.(CC)

Two thirds planted before the 1914 war, while the 1950s planting is more virused. A deeper crimson colour, with a mild reduction on the nose, which doesn’t sit too much on the fruit happily, and I love how this develops across the palate, in waves with a crystalline minerality behind. Possibly the reduction toughens up the finish a fraction just now, but this is a harmless level at this stage Drink from 2032-2040. Tasted Nov 2024.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Old vines, 2/3 from 1912. The mid-tones are very broad here – a little coffee/cocoa in the base – a tiny reduction too – and very slowly the perfume is released for the higher tones – but its reticent today. Fuller but composed – slowly melting perfume, and it grows even more in scale – there’s still that mocha flavour – I assume from the barrel – and confident length that would impress anyone. Usually my favourite wine here – and it’s certainly the longest – but that Cazetiers is still singing in my brain…"(01/2025)
