Rich, dark and chocolaty, but there’s also terrific stony freshness that lifts this up and points it in the direction of the heavens. Beneath all the black fruit is delicate meatiness and a touch of bark. Enormous concentration of very fine tannins, yet such purity and brightness that you dance with joy. Super-long and clean finish that is surprisingly cool given the power and intensity of the wine. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

High-toned, remarkably smooth, full-bodied and concentrated with marked acidity. Tannins are blocky and robust, but certainly ripe. Actually very elegant in fruit, with remarkable depth, power and freshness and a long finish, which is impressive considering the vintage conditions. Vines are around 50 years old, fermented in concrete, aged in recently used oak barrels for around 14 months. Drinking window: 2034-2047. (MW)

Chewy, rich and stylish at the same time, with powerful bolts of iron girding a large frame. The textural harmony is impressive, with savory tension and energy pulsing throughout, keeping the finish racy and firm. Tobacco leaf, black pepper, grilled garrigue and alder smoke complete the broad-shouldered package. Best from 2027 through 2042. —K.B.

From a lieu-dit that may have struggled slightly in the vintage, the 2022 Ermitage Le Méal has a pretty, perfumed, medium to full-bodied style as well as perfumed aromatics of black raspberries, roasted herbs, graphite, and floral notes. It doesn't have the density of a top vintage here, but it’s clearly a gorgeous wine and has finely polished tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish. If it puts on weight over the coming year, the barrel score will seem low.

John Livingstone-Learmonth for Cradle of the Rhône: "(cask) dark red; the nose has a lurking oxtail intensity, cooked plums, white tobacco hints, mulberry fruit that persists. The palate serves relative restraint for Méal, has a cool bearing, an almost wired presence, sinew in the content, with upright tannins, a rocky, near chewy element form them. It carries a blood like intensity through it, has the spine in place, will slot in around that as it expands over time. It’s like they have reversed the process so as to start with caution and develop richness, rather than serve richness right away. And they agree with that observation. That has changed the nature of the tannins, which are more chalky, fused. It’s rather a wait and see wine, taste post bottling. From 2027-28. 2049-51." (10/2023)
