Though light on its feet, this bottling begins with rather bold aromas of cherry, spearmint, wet slate and sharp spice on the nose. The palate sizzles with acidity that offsets a slight viscosity, as blood orange, cranberry, thyme and rainbow peppercorn aromas align.

Another perennial favorite, this is kind of the essence of the crunchy California Pinot Noir. Bright and full-fruited nose that's pushing towards pretty but has this little touch of something vaguely rustic on the edge, there's some floral notes around the outside. The palate is crunchy, lots of cranberry skin, underripe cherry, raspberry leaf, and some pomegranate seeds as well. It's easy and light and I could definitely see putting a little chill on this. It's just such an easy and friendly bottle, and a great wine to serve your friends who only drink European wines while still staying fairly local.

Notes

Inspired by the wines of Alsace, Union Sacré is a partnership between central coast winemakers Xavier Arnaudin and Philip Muzzy, two friends who picked up the tricks of the trade by working at such Central Coast wineries as Sans Liege, Barrel 27, Herman Story and Desperada. In 2012 they struck out on their own to make wine to share with friends. According to the winemakers: "We are not auteurs, adventurers or advocates, we are simply two friends throwing all our weight into making wine worthy of our friends’ and families’ tables. Union Sacre is the bread we break together."
