Smoky bacon, bay leaf and olive brine. This is very fine for a whole-bunch style, with lovely tannic finesse and texture. Powerful, tannic and cleansing, yet compact, with driving acidity, a dry, savoury finish and perfect balance. A good vintage, for what is a reliably good-value southern Rhône pick. Vineyards in conversion to organic; fruit is whole-bunch fermented. (MW)

60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 6% Marsanne, 5% Mourvèdre, 4% Grenache Blanc. No oak. In conversion to organic. Tasted blind. The nose shows ripe red fruits and a hint of floral character as well. A defined and smooth palate, brimming with ripe red fruits, such energy and vibrancy mark this wine – a freshness that really cleans the palate and cuts through the core. Long, fine and layered, delicious. (AC)

Notes

Domaine des Bernardins is a sixth generation family owned estate in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Situated on the east, south east slopes, the region has become famous for Muscat but the reds are on the rise. The vineyard holdings are comprised of 15 hectares of muscat and 7 hectares of red grape varieties for red production. All treatments in the vineyards are handled organically and sustainably. The Rouge is composed of 60% Grenache, 25% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre, 6% Marsanne and 4% Grenache Blanc, all raised in steel tanks and large oak foudre.
