Lots of tar, blueberry and balsamic aromas with a full body, chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Plenty of tannins to this. More traditional nature with solid tannins. Needs some time to soften. Better after 2022.

The Anna Maria Abbona 2016 Barolo Bricco San Pietro (with fruit from Monforte d'Alba) offers a dark and robust fruit profile with black fruits, crushed flowers, iron ore, cola and grilled rosemary. The bouquet shows depth and power, with background tones of dark spice and burnt ember. The personality here is spicy and savory, and the wine ends with medium texture and drying tannins. (ML)

Aromas of ripe plum, camphor, vanilla and hazelnut shape the nose. On the full-bodied palate, tightly wound, grainy tannins accompany Marasca cherry, blood orange, licorice and chopped mint before leaving a firm, drying finish. (KO)

This is where Anna Maria proves her mastery extends to Nebbiolo. From their small plot in the "Bricco San Pietro" MGA in Monforte d'Alba, this is a Barolo that combines muscular power with profound grace. The 2016 vintage is, of course, legendary—a year of perfect balance and aromatic purity. As a Riserva, this wine has spent years aging, slowly integrating its massive Monforte tannins. It’s a classic, old-school Barolo with breathtaking notes of tar, dried roses, licorice, and iron. A profound, meditative wine built for the long haul.

Notes

From a rising star of Monforte d’Alba, the 2016 Anna Maria Abbona “San Pietro” is a stunning Barolo Riserva from a legendary, five-star vintage. After nine years of patient aging in cask and bottle, this wine is just beginning to reveal its profound depth and complexity. The nose is wonderfully aromatic and classic, with notes of sour cherry, dried rose, and tar, layered with hints of licorice, iron, and crushed mint. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and immensely structured, with a massive framework of firm, noble tannins and vibrant acidity that promises decades of evolution. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant. A true cellar treasure for the patient Nebbiolo collector.
