The 2014 Viña Bosconia is 80% Tempranillo with 10% Garnacha, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from the El Bosque vineyard in Haro, Rioja. Garnet in hue, it opens with cassis, cola and oak-driven aromas. The palate is youthful and smooth, with well-integrated tannins, black fruit and anisette at the finish. Still growing, it’ll develop greater complexity with more time in bottle. (JH)

I loved the nose of the 2014 Viña Bosconia Reserva, a red that sells at an incredible price for the quality, the problem is (like all their wines) finding it... They had to accelerate the harvest to avoid botrytis caused by the abundant rain during the harvest. This is a blend of 80% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho and the remaining 5% Graciano and Mazuelo, fermented in old oak vats with their yeasts and matured in neutral American oak barrels for no less than five years. It's elegant and nuanced, developed but young for its age, with a seamless palate and very fine tannins, with energy and light. It has 13.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.3 and 6.7 grams of acidity, notable parameters of freshness. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2022. (LG) 94+

The Viña Bosconia wines are always distinctive for their Burgundy-shaped bottle, which references the wines original composition, which once included a high percentage of Pinot Noir as an homage to the wines of Burgundy. Today, the wine is mostly Tempranillo, balanced with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, but the bottle shape remains. The fruit is sourced from the family’s El Bosque vineyard which is located about one kilometer away from the winery. Vines here are planted on the south-facing foothills of the Sierra Cantabria range, providing them with the ideal conditions for ripening. As a result, the fruit profile tends to include darker fruit notes, and the 2014 Viña Bosconia clearly shows this unique character. Wild blackberries and black and red plum skin mingle on the nose, along with savory graphite, anise and porcini mushroom. This is such an elegant and nuanced example of Reserva Rioja, with still a lot of primary fruit freshness despite its over ten years of age, five of which are in barrel. The finish is so long, too. This is simply a great wine at a great price to secure while it’s still available.

This is divine—full stop. Everything comes together so seamlessly. The synergy of this Lopez De Heredia Vina Bosconia Reserva Rioja is so fine, it's difficult to parse out. Earthy plum with a soft ferrous edge blends into luxurious leather, black tea, and bergamot. This is exquisite. Drink now and dress for the occasion.

Notes

Bodegas R. López de Heredia is one of Spain’s most iconic and historically significant wineries, renowned for its steadfast dedication to traditional winemaking and extended aging practices. The winery is the oldest in Haro and one of the first three in the Rioja region, and they have consistent crafted extraordinary wines of place. Since its founding over 130 years ago, little has changed at López de Heredia. Unlike many Rioja producers who source grapes from a network of small growers, López de Heredia cultivates all its own fruit, sourcing exclusively from its own vineyards: Viña Tondonia, Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo, and Viña Gravonia. They rely exclusively on natural yeasts, avoid filtration, and continue to age their wines in wood for six to eight years—using barrels they craft themselves. A hallmark of their approach is extended aging; wines are released only when the family deems them ready, often 5–10 years post-harvest. Increasingly in demand, with wine collectors around the world seeking them out, any chance to secure López de Heredia should be taken advantage of!
