2021 Raineri "Castelletto" Barolo

2021 Raineri "Castelletto" Barolo

An austere Barolo, as expected from Castelletto. The fruit character is fresh, with aromas of pomegranates, red cherries, macerated violets and smoke. Full-bodied, it shows licorice flavors, crisp, integrated acidity and velvety, elegant tannins. Almost drinkable now, but at its best in 10 years.

If Perno is the intellect, Castelletto is the muscle. This vineyard faces east, looking directly at the powerhouse ridge of Serralunga d’Alba, and you can feel that kinship in the glass. This is a broader, darker, more powerful wine. It’s packed with balsamic notes, dark cherry fruit, licorice, and a savory, earthy depth. The tannins here are firmer, the shoulders broader. It’s a wine of serious presence that demands a rich meal (think braised beef or truffles) to show its full potential.

The 2021 Raineri “Castelletto” Barolo is graceful, lithe, and muscular—think male ballet dancer. Black plum and boysenberry lead, followed by blood orange zest, soft floral notes, exotic spices, and a streak of slate. Velvety tannins fill the mouth, while a lively acidity keeps everything fresh and buoyant. Fantastic structure, and an absolute steal right now. Clearly, our wine buyer has some impressive dance moves of his own to be able to offer it at this price.

Notes

From a top cru in Monforte d’Alba, the 2021 Raineri “Castelletto” is a stunningly pure and aromatic expression of Barolo. From the classic and structured 2021 vintage, this wine showcases the elegant, mineral-driven side of Monforte. The nose is wonderfully lifted and perfumed, with notes of sour cherry, wild strawberry, and rose petal, woven with hints of crushed stone, mint, and savory herbs. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and elegant, with a core of pristine red fruit framed by firm, incredibly fine-grained tannins and a vibrant, energetic acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant. A beautiful, terroir-driven Barolo with decades of aging potential.
