With judicious oak and extraction, the 2021 is well put together and chock full of flavour. Clean, vibrant aromas exude a harmonising mix of tarragon, nutmeg and fennel. Dense without being heavy, the strawberry soaked palate is carried by a long, vaulted arch of grainy tannins. Finishes with an orange twist. Gianmatteo (Jimmy) and his friends Fabrizio Giraudo and Luciano Racca started off making Dolcetto 20 years ago before Jimmy’s father-in-law entrusted him with his small Barolo parcel in Perno. (MM)

James Suckling

Review Date: 03/2025
A restrained wine with a nose of licorice, strawberries, red cherries, dried flowers and blood oranges. The attack is firm, with velvety, dusty tannins, crisp acidity, a full body and a very savory finish. Austere yet with a lot of good substance.

Perno is a fascinating cru in Monforte. It sits on a ridge that catches the wind, often producing wines that are more austere and “intellectual” than their neighbors. Raineri’s take is stunning. It opens with notes of wild mint, iron, and crushed rose petals. On the palate, it is tense and vertical, with fine-grained tannins that grip but don’t punish. This is Barolo for purists—elegant, savory, and precise. A wine that will evolve beautifully for decades.

Notes

From one of the rising talents in Monforte d’Alba, the 2021 Raineri “Perno” is a powerful and deeply expressive Barolo from this renowned cru. Capturing the classic structure of the 2021 vintage, this wine showcases the savory, muscular character for which Perno is known. The nose is deep and complex, with aromas of black cherry, plum, and dried rose, layered with powerful notes of licorice, iron, and a hint of balsamic. On the palate, it’s full-bodied and muscular, with a dense core of dark fruit framed by firm, powerful tannins and vibrant acidity. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant. A stunning, age-worthy Barolo that will reward extended cellaring.
