The 2019 Mélange Rouge, this was 47% Syrah, 35% Grenache, 12% Graciano, and the rest Petite Sirah. Deep ruby/purple-hued, with lots of blackberry, currants, peppery herbs, and baking spice notes, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness and has a round, layered mouthfeel, velvety tannins, and a great finish. It shines for its elegance and finesse while still bringing plenty of density and depth. A new estate for me, I was more than impressed by these releases (2018 was the inaugural vintage) from Walson Holland. A collaboration between winemaker Benjamin Holland and vineyard owner Jonas Svensson, the estate pulls from sites throughout Santa Barbara County and brilliant Rhône whites and reds. It’s worth pointing out that Holland has worked at some top-notch estates, including Kosta Browne and Sine Qua Non. Readers looking for the next superstar in the Central Coast should sit up and take notice.

The Wine Independent

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Melange Rouge drifts out with wonderfully peppery notes, giving way to stewed plums, Morello cherries, and boysenberry scents, with hints of garrigue and bacon fat. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a firm backbone of grainy tannins and great tension supporting the perfumed black and red fruit flavors, finishing long with a skip in its step. The blend is 48% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 12% Graciano, and 5% Petite Sirah from Slide Hill, Rancho Boa Vista, and Martian Ranch Vineyards. (LPB)

Today we have some absolutely epic pricing on a boutique, yet powerhouse Rhône blend that picked up not one, but two 95-point scores from top critics. At 60% off and under $30, this is a deal that's set to sell out in a hurry. Walson Holland is a small winery based in the Ojai Valley and sources fruit from some of the very finest vineyards across the central coast. Sources for this wine include Slide Hill, Rancho Boa Vista, Martian Ranch, Donnachadh, and Portico Hills. Winemaker / owner Benny Holland learned his craft in the hallowed cellars of Sine Qua Non and the influence is clear to see here. Attention to detail is the key with incredible purity, balance and texture across the entire range of wines. The 2019 Melange Rouge is a blend of 48% Syrah, 35% Grenache and 12% Graciano, and 5% Petite Sirah. The wine was raised in top quality French oak for 22 months, around 40% new wood. Ripe, deep, succulent fruit, blackberry, dark cherry liqueur, baking spice, dried flowers, classy oak. A polished, supple texture, some scorched earth, hot stone elements that remind me of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The quality here is plain to see both inside and outside of the bottle with a beautiful label and packaging. Just a few hundred cases were made and we have limited availability.

This 2019 Watson Holland opens with an alluring nose of baked blackberry, dark plum, and a subtle hint of sweet vanilla. The palate is full-bodied and rich, delivering concentrated flavors of black cherry and mocha that coat the mouth. Its bold structure and savory undertones pair exceptionally well with grilled lamb chops, offering incredible value for under $30. The finish is long and smooth, leaving a lasting impression of dark fruit and a whisper of cedar.

This is a serious wine with a firm structure and robust oaky finish reminiscent of dried cherries, dark chocolate, and black pepper. Wonderfully textured and balanced!
