Pear, lemon, lime and matchstick aromas. Plenty of sauvignon blanc character, but it’s not overdone. Full-bodied with a very dense palate and plenty of exotic fruit, but it’s tight and focused at the end. Drink now.

The Schiopetto 2023 Collio Sauvignon (with 30,000 bottles created) is another one of those classic expressions of this fragrant grape from northeast Italy. It is distinguished by varietal tones of tropical fruit and sweet citrus, but there is an additional textural softness here that, albeit subtle, is enough to contrast it against its New World cousins. Schiopetto’s Sauvignon is not like New Zealand or Sancerre. It is distinctly Friulian. It has the varietal "green" notes—tomato leaf, sage, and mint—but it also has a weight and density that you only find in the Collio. It is creamy, savory, and long, with a piercing mineral backbone.

Sauvignon Blancs from Northern Italy is a category I've been exploring lately. Often more expressive and distinctive, offering a fresh take on the famous varietal. Aromas of plump stone fruits, fresh lemons, yellow pear, slices of ginger, a touch of dried herbs. On the palate, crisp, clean, lively, with a nice, slight viscosity on the finish. Delicious!

Notes

The 2023 Schiopetto Sauvignon Blanc Collio is a crystalline and sophisticated expression of Friulian white wine, widely considered a benchmark for the region. On the nose, it is intensely aromatic and precise, offering a layered bouquet of pear, lemon, and lime zest interwoven with exotic fruit notes and a distinctive "matchstick" smokiness. The palate is medium-to-full bodied and exceptionally dense, balancing a ripe core of tropical fruit with high-toned green notes of mint, nettle, and tomato leaf. It finishes with striking tension and focus, marked by a savory, salty minerality and a persistent citrus lift that reflects the unique marly soils of Capriva del Friuli.
