This is very minerally and smoky, with matchstick undertones to the grilled lemon and dried apple aromas. Turns to honeysuckle and fresh lemongrass on the palate. It’s medium- to full-bodied, tangy and energetic, with hints of bitter lemons and rose stems. Excellent finish. Drink now.

In the tall bottle with the yellow label, the Schiopetto 2023 Collio Friulano offers classic layers of Golden Delicious apple, quince and mineral tones to close. The wine is bright and easy-drinking with good character linked to its native territory in northeast Italy, which has warm summer days and cold winter winds. Production is 40,000 bottles.

This is the signature wine of the estate and the region. If you want to understand Friuli, you start here. It is classic Tocai Friulano—textured and slightly oily on the palate, with that unmistakable bitter almond finish that acts as a palate cleanser. It smells of wildflowers, pear skin, and wet stone. It is the ultimate prosciutto wine.

When I first tasted Schiopetto's M Collio Friulano, I instantly became a fan. Luckily, this entry level Fruilano bottling offers a comparable experience, at a level of complexity for a fraction of the price. Bruised apricots, ripe citrus, lemon skin, fresh quince, jasmine tea, and wet gravel. Texturally, nice delicate tannins, and a crisp, refreshing finish.

Notes

The 2023 Schiopetto Collio Friulano is a refined and quintessential expression of the region’s historic grape, sourced from the marl-heavy "Ponca" soils of Capriva del Friuli. On the nose, it is strikingly complex and minerally, offering aromas of grilled lemon, dried apple, and pear accented by distinctive notes of smoky matchstick, wildflowers, and a faint hint of classic almond. The palate is medium-to-full bodied and energetic, balancing a structured, creamy texture with tangy acidity and flavors of honeysuckle and fresh lemongrass. It finishes with aristocratic poise, marked by a lingering saline minerality and the variety’s signature delicate bitter almond twist.
