The 2022 Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru is a real head-turner. What a wine! As is so often the case, Romanée St. Vivant is not an obvious wine, rather it is a Burgundy of detail, of understatement, of total class. The aromatics alone are mesmerizing. Silky tannins wrap around a core of red-toned fruit, mint, white pepper, blood orange and exotic spice. The long, resonant finish is impossibly elegant. Haute couture.(AG)

The Romanée-St-Vivant has developed more complexity since bottling, with a savoury, almost gamey edge to the lush berry fruit aromas and a hint of spice. The grip and freshness of the wine are impressive and seem to carry this wine to a new level of intensity. Although this wine had originally seemed ethereal and silky, the substantial nature of the structure is now evident, aided perhaps by the stricter selection. Bertrand de Villaine confirms that two parcels in this vineyard were pulled up due to issues with the rootstock, leaving them 23,699 bottles in 2022.(CC)

Romanée-St.-Vivant and Richebourg are always an interesting comparison for me. Tasted from barrel in January 2024, both were expressive and aromatic, exuding floral notes. From bottle, the former is shy, suggesting cherry, strawberry and spice flavors. Nonetheless, there is plenty of structure and length.

Marasca cherries, anise and tobacco spice pop from the glass. Always giving early on and frequently showing best this early on, the nose is as striking as ever on this cuvée. The palate feel is velvety and polished with gently curvaceous fruit and nimble acidity. Distractingly long on the finish, the mineral edge and whole bunch spice gently push aside the disarmingly youthful fruit.

Notes

95pts Neal Martin writing for Vinous: "The 2022 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru was picked 7, 8 and 10 September at 39.8 hL/ha. It needs a little time to unfold in the glass. Scents of crushed iris flower commingle with predominantly red berry fruit, hints of peat and even camphor. This augurs a powerful and opulent RSV. The palate is silky smooth and rounded in texture, with what feels like slightly lower acidity than the preceding Grands-Échézeaux. It retains the veins of blue fruit that I observed from barrel. A light touch of white pepper emerges towards the multi-faceted finish. This is very alluring and sensual, showing wonderful persistence with a touch of Szechuan pepper lingering at the tip of the tongue on the aftertaste. Impressive, but outclassed by the Richebourg at the moment. Perhaps this cuvée bares the imprimatur of the growing season more than others? 1,975 cases produced."(02/2025) Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "One part replanted in 2010 is not yet incorporated, but maybe soon… Ooh – now here is perfume – silken and red! For the first time, the room falls silent. Mobile, almost fluid yet the structure is there, a small rub of über-fine grained tannin. A softness of touch despite the structure of the wine. A wine built for the word feminine but there is muscle here too, bravo! If the GE suggested greatness, it is much clearer here!"(02/2025)
