Though based on Tinta Negra, Barbeito’s Island Rich Madeira has the richness of a luscious Malmsey. The grapes ferment in stainless steel to the desired sweetness before being fortified with wine-derived neutral spirits. While other producers make their 5-year-old wines via the estufa method (avoiding the expense of barrel aging), Barbeito ages their "Island" Madeiras by the same costly canteiro method employed for the single vintage wines. With about 100g/L of residual sugar, this is a delightfully sweet expression of Madeira with an excellent balance of candied citrus, caramel and honey notes.
