A blend of 48/28/24% shiraz/grenache/mataro aged for 15 months in French oak. Bright aromas of red and dark plum, mulberry and boysenberry mesh with hints of earth, licorice, spice, roasting meats and violets. Lovely fruit purity with tight-grained tannin providing the framework and bright acidity the pulse, finishing plush and pure. A wonderful red.

A juicy and fruity red with blackberry and some dark chocolate and graphite character. Lead pencil, too. Medium-bodied with creamy and integrated tannins and a juicy finish. Savory and delicious. Some iodine. A blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvedre.

The 2021 Plexus comprises 48% Shiraz, 28% Grenache and 24% Mourvèdre. This is the first wine that John Duval made when he left Penfolds; the first vintage was 2003. This is polished and juicy, the long and mild 2021 season on show here. There are notes of raspberry pip and cocoa, a hint of chocolate-covered licorice and tobacco, brine and star anise. It's a lovely wine, as ever. And it's potentially a superstar release, given the inherent balance and length of the season and, therefore, the wine too.

This quite serious 2021 Red Plexus is a Rhone blend of Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvèdre with an almost Gigondas feel. It delivers exceptional value with its brooding blackberry, meat stocks and licorice aromas, plus a dusting of spices. Dry with excellent focus and concentration, the cooler 2021 vintage provided a tighter and tannic package delivering waves of meaty olive tapenade and peppery complexity. The length is excellent, but it needs a little time to blossom. (AH)

Comprised of 48% Shiraz, 28% Grenache, and 24% Mourvedre – all sourced from old vines in the heart of the Barossa Valley – the 2021 Plexus nimbly balances power with elegance. According to John Duval, the aim of Plexus is to express a wide spectrum of flavors, while offering seamless integration of the three varietals. The Shiraz adds richness and a spicy note, while the Grenache lifts the wine with juicy fruit notes, and the Mourvedre adds a suble but brooding black fruit undertone. A pretty iris note lingers in the background, enhancing the wine’s sense of finesse and restraint. Fermented separately, the parcels were later blended together and matured in French oak barriques, only 15% new. The resulting wine is stunning, almost Southern Rhône inspired, but entirely South Australian. Neither cloying nor overly rich, the Plexus manages to be highly concentrated yet very delicate at the same time.

Notes

John Duval is one of Australia's most acclaimed winemakers, with deep roots in South Australia’s Barossa Valley. His passion was cemented during a 28-year tenure at Penfolds, where he rose to Chief Winemaker and played a pivotal role in the legacy of the iconic Grange. Recognized globally, his accolades include International Winemaker of the Year and Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year. In 2003, Duval launched his own label—John Duval Wines—focused on the Barossa’s low-yielding, old-vine Shiraz, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. His wines are known for their intensity, complexity, and regional character. In 2016, his son Tim joined the family business, ushering in a new generation. Duval draws from decades of experience and a deep understanding of the Barossa to craft wines of place. He employs submerged-cap fermentation in open-top tanks for gentle extraction and favors minimal new oak to highlight old vine fruit purity. His wines—layered, structured, and restrained—stand out for their elegance and aging potential. With its warm climate and treasured old vines, the Barossa Valley yields fruit of great concentration and character. Thanks to long-standing grower relationships and deep regional knowledge, Duval has access to some of Barossa’s finest sites. The John Duval wines are a tribute to the land’s heritage and potential.
