2017 Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
96
James Suckling
Review Date: 05/2024Complex aromas of cigar box, incense, black cherry fruit and bay leaves with balsamic notes. The palate is creamy, off-dry and velvety, with a full body and long, refreshing acidity. There is a lot of sucrosity and spices. A generous wine with a lush, well-balanced palate. Drink or hold.

Notes
Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2017 is an exceptional wine from one of Italy's most iconic producers, known for their dedication to traditional winemaking and unparalleled attention to detail. Quintarelli’s Amarone is a benchmark in the Veneto region, often regarded as the pinnacle of Amarone production, crafted with a level of care and precision that results in a wine of remarkable complexity, power, and elegance. The 2017 vintage reflects the family's commitment to producing world-class Amarone, with the wine embodying the essence of Valpolicella's unique terroir. Produced from a blend of traditional grape varieties—Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella, and others—Quintarelli’s Amarone follows the traditional appassimento method, where grapes are harvested and then left to dry on mats for several months before fermentation. This process concentrates the sugars and flavors, giving the wine its characteristic richness and depth. The 2017 vintage reveals an intense bouquet of dried cherries, blackberries, and plums, layered with notes of fig, raisin, and dark chocolate. Aromas of tobacco, leather, licorice, and sweet spices, such as cinnamon and clove, add complexity to the wine, while hints of dried herbs and balsamic nuances provide depth.
