A bright red color with orange highlights, the 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino is very pretty, with a delicate rustic hint that I find quite attractive. It reveals attractive red fruit on the nose, with notes of cranberries, wild herbs, and just a subtle hint of saddle leather and blood orange. Mid-weight, it's light on its feet while delivering wonderful energy and freshness, with snappy ripe red fruit, a refreshing, angular feel, and mouthwatering saline and acidity. This is certainly one of the highlights of the 2020 vintage. (AF)

The 2020 Brunello from Fuligni is fragrant, smooth and delicious. It opens with enticing aromas of wild berry, violet, crushed mint and pine forest. Full-bodied and loaded with flavor and finesse, it delivers mature Marasca cherry, raspberry, star anise and cake spice set against fine-grained tannins. Boasting a weightless finesse, it’s well balanced, with fresh acidity.

Immense, sober and timeless elegance to indulge in little by little. The rigorous, territorial, aromatic framework leaves room for a well-balanced gustative texture between mature tannins and balsamic freshness. The 380-450m-high vineyards extend over about 15ha, mainly around the winery's nucleus, on the north-eastern slope of the Montalcino hillside. (AP

Smoky woodland, dried flowers and earthy notes, then cherries and red berries. Full of licorice root, too. The layered fruit profile follows through to a medium-bodied palate with additional, toasty flavors. The firm, velvety tannins show a slightly austere grain on the finish, yet balanced by the fruit and acidity. A powerful wine with lots of character.

The Fuligni estate, a historic property on the cooler, eastern slopes of Montalcino, is revered for producing wines of incredible finesse and purity This is a Brunello that captivates with its perfume. The nose is a soaring and intricate display of wild cherry, raspberry, crushed violets, and sweet spice, with underlying notes of fresh mint, white pepper, and a distinct, stony minerality. This is a benchmark Brunello. It has all the textbook characteristics of Sangiovese in Montalcino. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and silky, with a core of pure, vibrant fruit supported by a framework of ultra-fine, chalky tannins and brilliant acidity. It yummy, really Burgundian. Aged traditionally in large Slavonian oak casks: it is a wine for the purist and the patient collector. To me this is the standout of this vintage so far.

Graceful and elegant yet tightly corseted, the 2020 Fuligni Brunello di Montalcino is a study in Tuscan finesse. Cherries, plum compote, nutmeg, sandalwood, and black tea lead into a brown sugar-tinged finish--not sweet but beautifully layered, heartwarming, and utterly satisfying.

This is just such a great wine, and after opening up all day long it's really so accessible and approachable, I'm sure it just needs a healthy decant and a few hours to really hit its stride. This has power, but is more a wine defined by elegance and grace, there's a lot of fruit but it's a little more nuanced and subtle, like a really creative blend that you can't quite put your finger on because it works together so well nothing really jumps out, but there's red and black fruits there and then a little bit of roundness, but the spice is all from the grape. The palate is almost silky if the tannin wasn't just a touch too present for that, but it still has a really luxurious and defined sort of mouthfeel with pretty cherry around the edges of the palate and dusky dusty fruit in the midst, something that brings together the experience of being in oak but nothing very new or smaller format is how it comes across, the reality of which I don't know and wouldn't really change anything in this review. This is kind of definitive Brunello di Montalcino and something that you have to treat yourself to if you love Italian wine.

Notes

Fuligni’s Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a refined and expressive take on this storied appellation, combining power with elegance. The nose is layered with red cherry, wild berries, dried rose, and hints of sweet spice, framed by subtle notes of cedar and earth. The palate is structured yet graceful, offering juicy red fruit, tobacco, and crushed herbs, supported by firm tannins and vibrant acidity. A long, mineral-driven finish lingers with notes of leather and balsamic. A poised, cellar-worthy Brunello that will evolve beautifully, perfect for roasted meats and aged pecorino.
