You do not need to take only our word for it either, as Whisky Advocate rated it 93 points and Drinks Hacker gave it an A-, making it one of the most highly acclaimed blended malts in years. “The Secrets of Smoke” is everything a peat lover dreams of while still offering remarkable fruit, reminiscent of the great sweetly peated whiskies of decades past. Fans of old Lagavulin Distillers Edition will immediately recognize the kinship. The nose bursts with roasted fruit—grilled peaches, pineapple, roasted lemon—woven into creosote, tar, exotic oils, hemp rope, and honeyed nuts. The palate is brilliantly composed, balancing purple fruit with the deep peat, framed by vanilla, spiced sugar, blueberry pie, garam masala, and pine, all layered over a pillowing haze of smoke. It is an absolutely gorgeous whisky and a fitting sendoff to our friend James Saxon, who guided this release as one of his final Compass Box projects.
