2021 was an exceptional year in the Langhe as is clearly demonstrated by the gorgeous 2021 Barbaresco from Produttori. It boasts beautiful aromas of violet, rose, cake spice and mint that carry over to the elegant palate along with succulent red cherry, crushed raspberry and star anise. Taut, refined tannins and bright acidity keep it impeccably balanced. Made from blending Nebbiolo from different vineyard sites, this is the firm’s classic Barbaresco and is one of the greatest values in Italian fine wine.

This wine gives us our first taste of the epic 2021 vintage from a producer as prolific as Produttori del Barbaresco. Bottled in April 2024, this vintage shows the immense power and complexity that likens it to 2016, another year for collectors. The 2021 Barbaresco offers medium-rich density that is transmitted both to the wine's appearance and its mouthfeel. There is black fruit, spice and a touch of nutmeg. However, the wine maintains its youthful tension and energy throughout. The tannins are chalky, fine and void of any bitterness. This is a classical expression of Nebbiolo that gives us good reason to be excited for the upcoming 2021 Barbaresco Riservas. (ML) 95+

The 2021 Barbaresco offers more complexity and sports a bit deeper shade of red than the 2021. Layered with aromas of kirsch, darker spice, cardamom, candied flowers, and orange peel, the palate is more structured and compact, with savory notes of salty earth, angular, ripe tannins, and its more citrus-noted acidity shining on the palate. It has more nervous energy and needs more time.

An intriguing wine with aromas of potpourri, dried cherries and candied orange zest. Smoky and juicy on the palate, with firm, dusty yet ripe tannins, a full body and a long, savory finish. Drinkable now, but it has great potential for the long haul.

It’s a date we mark on our calendars every year: the arrival of the new vintage of the classic Produttori del Barbaresco. For those of you who follow this iconic cooperative, you know what a benchmark this wine is. 2021 was one of the best vintages in Barbaresco ever, it’s time to stock up your cellar with this beauty. 2021 is a year defined by aromatic purity, vibrant acidity, and wonderfully structured, fine-grained tannins—all the hallmarks of a long-aging, classic vintage. The nose is a soaring display of crushed red cherries, wild strawberries, and rose petals, with underlying notes of anise and tar. It perfectly captures the elegance and finesse that distinguish Barbaresco. Don’t forget about magnums, they age beautifully and at this price are hard to miss.

I’m a huge fan of Produttori and had been eagerly awaiting the new 2021 bottling—and this gem more than lived up to those lofty expectations for both producer and vintage. What struck me most was the purity and finesse: remarkably refined and pretty, yet with real depth of fruit and refreshing acidity. It delivers all the hallmark Nebbiolo notes, with aromas of roses and blood orange, bright red fruit flavors, and super-fine, elongated tannins. While I can’t wait to see how it evolves with age, it already offers plenty of pleasure now with a healthy decant. For a tremendous, top-flight Barbaresco at this price, the 2021 is something special—easily one of their most finessed and beautiful non-riserva bottlings in recent memory.

Notes

Produttori del Barbaresco’s Barbaresco 2021 is an elegant and expressive interpretation of Nebbiolo, showcasing finesse, complexity, and vibrant structure. The nose unfolds with red cherry, wild strawberry, and dried rose, layered with hints of sweet spice, licorice, and crushed stone. On the palate, silky tannins and lively acidity support flavors of juicy red fruit, earthy minerality, and subtle nuances of tobacco. A long, persistent finish reveals notes of balsamic, cedar, and a touch of spice.
