2024 Vinos del Viento "Amber" Moscatel
Review Date: 09/2025
I don't always know what to think about natural wines or orange wines, and this one definitely isn't an exception, but I love a challenge and while this is definitely a bit weird it's not unpleasant or stinky in a way that natural wines sometimes can be. The nose is so aggressively floral, a little bit like a tea made out of potpourri, but in a way that somehow is good and a little but alluring. The palate is fairly similar, though there's some fruit underneath all those floral notes, something a little bit like golden kiwi and something kind of like a honeyed white grape. It's really enjoyable in a way I didn't think it would be, and while yes natural and yes orange, it's not funky or off-putting. I feel like I really want to have this with some slightly aged goat cheese or any other mostly fresh fairly soft cheese. Beyond that, my best advice to have a bottle of this with your friends while you all try to describe what you're tasting, because this is definitely a little bonkers in a very fun and surprisingly approachable way.

Notes
Michael Cooper is the winemaker at Vinos del Viento. A native to Southern California he moved to Spain 20 years to follow his heart. Along his journey he became enamored with Garnacha. Vinos del Viento has always been about exploring and expressing the variety of Terroirs and varietals in his new home, Aragon, and its neighbor Catalonia. He has recently established his own winery after years of making wine throughout the region in other people's facilities. With a base in Campo de Borja, he has started to focus his attention there, with its old bush vines that are dry farmed. He farms organically with some biodynamic principles and sources fruit from others who do the same. His wines are always expressive, true to their place and varietal but there is a little bit of California to them, just a little more accessible, and a lot of fun. Amber refers to the color of this “Orange” wine. It is a blend of Muscat d’Alexandria, Garnacha Blanca, and Macabeu. The fruit is organically grown, fermentation is done with native yeasts and with minimal intervention. The wine spent 30 days in contact with the grape skins. This could be an “Orange” wine for everyone, the secret is the Muscat. The bold fruit and floral tones of the varietal bring a familiar accessibility to the wild spice and texture of the wine. The other varietals bring a freshness and length to the wines. Wild and textural enough for the die-hards, accessible for the curious and reasonably priced as well.
