Husband and wife Vincente and Bernadita Johnson started Trasiego in 2015 with the idea of sourcing fruit from small, independent Chilean winegrowers while helping them to farm sustainably and ensuring they were paid fairly. For many wineries, this might be marketing talk, but for Trasiego, they decided to pursue B Corp certification to prove their dedication to equitable business practices and producing wines with the lowest possible environmental impact. The 2023 “Green Quartz” Sauvignon Blanc is produced from grapes grown in the Lo Orozco region of the Casablanca DO, just 8 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, where the strong maritime influence and granitic soils with a high presence of quartz produce mineral-driven, lean and focused wines with fine-tined acidity. The effect of quartz rocks on vines and grapes is not fully understood, but it is believed that quartz crystals contribute minerality and a certain salinity to the wine, in addition to holistic beliefs that they heal, cleanse, balance, and strengthen the chakras—resulting in physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures, and the wine rests on fine lees for three months before bottling. Displaying classic New World Sauvignon Blanc notes of grapefruit pith and more tropical papaya and passionfruit, this wine also has classic coastal Chilen green herbaceous character and a saline-tinged finish.
