2023 Carl Loewen Leiwener Laurentiuslay Riesling Spätlese Mosel
95
James Suckling
Review Date: 08/2024A very classic Mosel riesling Spatlese that’s juicy and elegant. Only the volume from the natural grape sweetness lifts this up to just qualify as medium-bodied, so sleek is the underlying structure. Stacks of peach and citrus character, yet very precise and finely nuanced in the long finish. Vegan. Drink or hold.

Notes
92pts Mosel Fine Wines: "AP: 16 24. The 2023 Laurentiuslay Riesling Spätlese, as it is referred to on the front label, was block-harvested with a tiny proportion of botrytis at 88° Oechsle from grapes situated higher up the central part of the vineyard and was fermented and matured in Fuder down to fruity-styled levels of residual sugar (61 g/l). It displays a quite aromatic and ripe nose of William pear, almond cream, yellow peach, aniseed, quince, a hint of melon, and earthy spices. The wine coats the palate with very juicy and slightly honeyed yellow fruits as well as a hint of exotic touch. The feeling of acidity is comparatively low, so that the sweetness still stands out at this early stage, and makes it come over as a riper Auslese-like wine. The length is impressive, and it is packed with complexity. This rich, sweet, and creamy Spätlese needs a decade to fully integrate its elements and shine. 2033-2053 "(08/2024)
