2023 Anonymous Wine Collective Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Oh my, this bottling turned out even better than I expected...and I had high expectations to begin with! The idea of crafting a great bottle of $20 Napa Valley Cabernet in this day and age is almost impossible...almost. But what if you go one of the OG winemakers who helped put Napa Cab on the map. A man who has worked in First Growth Chateaux in Bordeaux, and who has four decades of experience in Napa Valley. A man who knows the lay of land intimately. Who knows where to get great fruit without paying top dollar. Well, that's exactly what we did. This 2023 Cabernet is sourced from a single vineyard high in the Vaca Mountains. The rocky, volcanic soils produce powerful, concentrated fruit, that is bursting with blackberry and cassis, but true to this winemaker's more classically aligned style, also captures some of the finer varietal characters with hints of mint, cedar, pencil lead and subtle tobacco leaf. The wine is aged in entirely seasoned French oak. Without any new barrels the oak is very subtle and just delicately frames the wonderful purity of fruit. For a mountain-grown Cab the texture is nicely polished, but it still has sneaky power under the refined fruit and fine tannins. Put this in a blind tasting and you won't believe it's a $20 bottle...oh, that's because it's not, this winemaker's Cabs routinely sell for $80-$90+ and it's only through our Anonymous Wine Collective agreement that we can bring this rockstar Cab to you at such a modest price. Don't be afraid to case up here, this wine will easily age 8-10 years comfortably, maybe longer in a cold cellar. This has to be a contender for best value so far in the Anonymous range...it's flat-out ridiculous for this price!

I actually prefer writing these reviews before I know who actually made the wine, I feel like it puts a small gauze of impartiality between myself and the product. That said, I will shill for these Anonymous Wine Collective wines all day long because every single one of them presents a great value for what you're getting. It's not that I'm "on your side", my friends, it's that I have to feel good about the products that I'm selling and reviewing just to feel good about myself too. This wine is no exception, I have no clue who made it, but I know that I really like it, especially at the price. There's lots of pretty cherry, with touches of blackberry compote, and some creaminess to the fruit. It's just an incredibly pleasant nose, easygoing and it's almost like the wine promising that the palate is going to be num nums. The palate has everything I want out of a Cabernet Sauvignon, it's got depth and a little bit of something inky but enough acidity that there's a constant battle between the drying of the tannins and the watering of your mouth. The fruit is really pretty and layered, with darker fruit on the outside giving way to touches of cocoa and coffee from the barrel spice. The finish is moderate length and ends with a bit of toasty barrel and little hints of fruit. For $20 this is pretty amazing, and it's going to be going into a lot of people's hands looking for a med+ body Cabernet Sauvignon that will absolutely compliment a richly marbled steak and a fat potato. Butter is not optional.

Notes

The Anonymous Wine Collective project is all about giving folks access to incredible wines at incredible prices. It's about partnering with winemakers with upfront commitments to secure unique parcels of wine, then getting them in bottle with the least amount of wasted expense possible. We're cutting out the middle men. We don't have a luxurious tasting room to pay for. We don't have a six figure marketing budget to inflate our bottle costs. We work directly with wineries to secure great wines, from the source and bring them directly to you. We protect our sources by keeping quiet about the vineyards or winemakers behind them because often times our Anonymous bottlings sell for a fraction of the price you would normally pay under the typical label. This Napa Valley Cabernet is one such occasion. I can't tell you too much about this one, but I can say that this wine was sourced entirely from a one single mountain vineyard in the Pope Valley sub-AVA of Napa. I can also say that is was crafted for us by a legendary winemaker with decades of experience making wines at both First Growth Châteaux in Bordeaux and famed estates in Napa Valley. In true house style, this wine combines an old-world sensibility with broad, lush, rich Napa fruit and a little mountain structure. The pricing here for quality Napa Cabernet is just ridiculous. You can drink this beauty any night of the week and not even feel bad about it! One of the best values we've offered so far under the Anonymous label!
