2024 Bortolusso Pinot Grigio Friuli

Forget everything you think you know about simple Pinot Grigio. This 2024 Bortolusso is a world away from mass-market bottlings, offering a crisp, mineral-driven expression that could only come from its unique home near the Marano Lagoon in Friuli. The constant sea breezes and mineral-rich soils of this coastal area give the wine a vibrancy and complexity that is truly special. I wish I could upload a picture to this page: the winery is amazing. The vineyard is on the lagoon. There is a saline note that is the signature of this producer. This is the kind of authentic, high-quality Pinot Grigio that we are always searching for in Italy. It’s just a perfect everyday friend. Top pick!

The 2024 Bortolusso Pinot Grigio is most definitely not your ex-girlfriend’s Pinot Grigio. In a world awash in insipid specimens, this one is a genuine game-changer. It’s fun and effortless yet attention grabbing and characterful. In the glass, it’s fresh, clean, orderly, and dry, with flavors of juicy pear, yellow peach, fresh-from-the-hive honeycomb, ginger, orange blossom, and a touch of gravelly minerality. It wildly overdelivers for the price, and at just 12.5% ABV it’s perfect for a lazy afternoon, warm evenings, or any night you want to enjoy life but still show up to work tomorrow. Serve cool, not cold.

Outstanding Pinot Grigio for unbelievable price! Full of flavor and nuances, it shines with pear, Mirabelle plum and Opal apple flavors. It's fresh and dry but has supple texture and long mouthwatering finish. Definitely more complex than your average Pinot Grigio and great wine to sip by itself or pair with lighter food.

Yet another super pretty nose, it's just really ripe and lush with some tropical fruits, fleshy peaches, nectarine, and then a little bit of honeyed lemon peel on the finish mingling with a handful of white flowers. This is kind of what I think about when I think Pinot Grigio, something that is just crazy accessible and easygoing, kind of like me. The palate is super juicy, with ripe pear mingling with the tropical fruits and the nectarine, it's a little bit less lush than the nose but no less delicious. This is just a crazy good deal, and will be a great bottle to have around during the holidays. It's always nice to have box of wine that you just don't mind just opening when someone comes over and needs to wet their whistle just a bit due to all the conversating and sharing of the last year. This wine belongs in that box, it's delicious and easy, kind of like me.

Notes

The Bortolusso Pinot Grigio Friuli is produced in the Friuli Annia DOC zone near Carlino, Udine, in the coastal Friuli-Venezia Giulia, where vines grow in unique saline soils near the Marano lagoon, imparting a distinctive sapidity to the wine. Pinot Gris is gently pressed, where it cools and settles for a slow, cool fermentation to preserve the fruit’s natural qualities.
