A very structured and gorgeous Rioja with blackberry, cherry, cedar and spice aromas and flavors. Hints of toasted oak underneath. Granite, too. Medium-bodied, yet the structure builds on the palate, giving superb length and power. Give it three to five years to come together, and beyond.

A bit coiled upon opening, this opens slowly in the glass, revealing beautiful nuance, fragrant herbal details and savoury complexity underneath the broody restraint. Top notes of vanilla, charred oak, camphor and preserved cherry. Fresh and exact on the palate, with dark chocolate and coffee beans lining the muscular tannins. Very long finish, supported by a firm acid backbone. 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, fermented in small oak vats with malolactic in concrete, then aged in new and second-use oak barrels, 70% French plus American. A small step up over the Vina Real Gran Reserva Especial, with slightly more breadth and richness (but maybe not the precision), the 2017 Imperial Gran Reserva is based on 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and the rest Mazuelo that spent two years in oak, with just under 5,000 cases produced. Its deep plum/purple hue is followed by a brilliant array of ripe black cherries, cassis, iron, candied violets, and vanilla oak. This carries to a medium to full-bodied Rioja with the juicy, lively, fresher acidity of the vintage, plenty of ripeness, and finely polished tannins, while more Bordeaux-like smoky tobacco and lead pencil notes develop with air. This beauty deserves another 3-4 years in the cellar and will evolve for at least two decades.

I tasted two vintages of the Gran Reserva from Haro, starting with the 2017 Imperial Gran Reserva from a warm and dry year whose yields were lowered by frost in late April and was saved by rains at the end of July. It's 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo with 14% alcohol, a pH of 3.65 and 5.31 grams of acidity. It fermented in small oak vats followed by malolactic in concrete and aging in French (70%) and American oak barrels for two years, during which time the wine was racked every eight months. It's evolving at a slightly faster pace and maybe it's a little lighter, but I didn't feel the heat, which is quite something. It's drinking well. (LG)

Notes

Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España (CVNE) is one of Spain’s most influential and historic wineries, founded in 1879 by brothers Raimundo and Eusebio Real de Asúa in the famed Barrio de la Estación in Haro, Rioja Alta. Over its nearly century-and-a-half of operation, CVNE has remained family-run and has played a major role in shaping modern Rioja winemaking, becoming known for innovations such as gravity-flow winery design and building some of the first temperature-controlled fermentation facilities in the region. Among CVNE’s most renowned achievements is its Imperial line, which represents the pinnacle of the estate’s craftsmanship and is produced only in exceptional vintages. The Imperial Gran Reserva is sourced from high-altitude, older vineyards in Rioja Alta that provide concentrated fruit and naturally balanced acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully selected before undergoing traditional fermentation and extended ageing in both American and French oak barrels. After two years in barrel, the wine continues to mature in bottle within CVNE’s deep underground cellars. The result is a classic, age-worthy Rioja with layered aromas of dark fruit, spice, leather, and balsamic notes supported by polished tannins. Over time, Imperial Gran Reserva has become one of Spain’s most collectible wines and a benchmark for the Gran Reserva category.
