Our second batch of K&L Liquors is here and WOW it's so special I can't even believe it. I will always refer to this label as the "Every Drop," but this batch is called "Dawning Era," in reference to the new phase in our relationship with Kentucky bourbon - buying, blending, and bottling our own juice. This batch was much more nerve-wracking and complex than the previous batch. It consists of 3 different lots of this famous liquid distilled contractually in Frankfort, Kentucky, and aged near Lawrenceburg for over 16 years. While the tendency in the industry is to not want to waste any of this wildly rare juice, I insisted on tasting every barrel in advance of blending. Having an idea of the volumes - which were, incidentally, ridiculously low - I made a proportional blend of the various casks to mimic the final blend using barrel samples. But one sample stuck out like a sore thumb, changing the sweet & spicy red fruit-forward old bourbon into a wood-driven monolith. When we removed that barrel - its total volume fewer than 14 liters, so just a few drops in my desk blend - the package came together perfectly. Another barrel, which was so unique and delicious and yielded only 19 liters, seemed to add none of its unique exotic character, so that was held back as well. The resulting bourbon is delicious beyond my wildest expectations. Now that the final blend is here, let's evaluate this incredible bourbon. The color is mahogany (1.6). There's so much going on here, but you cannot tease it out instantly. This one needs and deserves time to brood and boast in the glass. Once you've let it rest, though, we've got a huge nose of cherry jam, dark chocolate, coconut, sweet stewed peaches, clove honey, sandalwood, and oiled cedar. The palate is ultra-rich and oily, with the red fruit and chocolate sticking up front and a rich vanilla, dense dark wood, powerful baking spices covering the mid-palate. The finish is long and round, giving this a very open and inviting feel, but it's so powerful and unctuous. It really is the total package in my opinion. As contrasted by the 15 year version we have more savory complexity on the nose and less dusty tannin on the palate. The red fruit, powerful spice and lack of funky earthy tannin makes this one feel more on the Frankfort side of things compared to the last one which felt more obviously comparable to Lawrenceburg distillate. By any measure this is a stupendously delicious rare find that likely deserves the incredibly high prices our competitors are asking for similar bourbon from the same lots, but K&L Liquors is ALL about creating value for our customers and this whisky does that without a doubt.

Initial nose: Chocolate, brown sugar, caramel. Later- honey, baking spice. Initial palate: Black tea, warmed butter. Water added: Honey, chamomile. Initial heat affirms 120 proof. Great structure that is framed by oak, but not overwhelmed by it. Water brings it to full elegance. Masterfully made and an absolute steal at this price!!

Is it luck, or is it the kind of deep experience and instinct that only comes with years in the game that led us to these barrels? I’m too new here to say for certain, but I definitely have my suspicions. In the end, it doesn’t really matter how or why—only that we ended up with this treasure, and it’s absolutely unbelievable. To land a 16-year-old bourbon of this magnitude for less than $300 feels like a coup. I’m slowly getting used to the fact that here at K&L we stumble into these glorious unicorns, and you get to share in the spoils. Even at 120 proof, the nose never comes across as harsh. Instead, it welcomes you with waves of deep oak and rich spice, layered with charred caramel, black cherry compote, cinnamon-dusted dried apricots, and the earthy perfume of a damp forest floor. The first sip wraps itself around your palate with musty wood, stewed stone fruits, indulgent baking spices, a whisper of candy-capped mushrooms, and dark chocolate laced with burnt caramel. Soon after, hints of charred orange oil and espresso glide in, giving way to a finish that unspools with ginger, peppery spice, tobacco leaf, toffee, and roasted vanilla bean, lingering for what feels like forever. It’s effortlessly sippable neat, yet a splash of water teases out even more baked fruit and rustic spice. Bold without being brash, powerful yet approachable, this is a whiskey that commands attention without demanding it. For the bourbon lover in your life, it’s the kind of bottle you’ll want to grab before it vanishes.

Alright folks let's put on our helmets and buckle up; this is going to be fun. There's a really cool backstory here, and if you haven't yet, please take a moment and give David OG's review a read. This is the second of these K&L Liquors that I've had the privilege to try thus far, and both are absolutely phenomenal, not to spoil the ending of this review for you or anything. Whenever you nose a spirit, it's much further outside the glass than you do for a wine, which I always have to remind myself, I'm so used to the latter. I, maybe, singed my nostrils a touch. This is really something special, there's all this pretty red fruit, but fully ensconced in a mire of burnt caramel, vanilla cream, and amped up barrel spice. Both cinnamon and clove seem to pop a bit higher on the spices, and the fruit goes from ripe to just very slightly stewed. The palate is thick, the mouthfeel absolutely off the charts, and what the nose promised is absolutely delivered, with bright red fruit, a not too sweet vanilla custard dusted with cocoa, and then barrel spice and toast on the lingering finish. All that and this bad boy can also carry its proof, while nobody would blame you for a splash of water or a rock or two in the glass, it isn't a requirement for registered members of the Cask Strength Sippers Club. This is ridiculously good, and is a bottle that's going to disappear just as quickly as the 15 did once the word gets out. I like you, and I don't want you to miss out on something special, and this is really something special.

With an average age closer to 17 years than 16, this singular batch of bourbon remains unmatched. The whisky was crafted at an undisclosed distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, according to a mashbill of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% barley. It was aged throughout its maturation in traditional rickhouses near Lawrenceburg. This coveted batch is likely one of the final batches from this unique and special set of bourbons that we'll have the privilege to access.
