93+ points. Raúl Pérez’s Ultreia Saint Jacques is made from another old vineyard, having been planted between 1910 and 1940. Like most very old vineyards in Bierzo, it is made from a field blend composed of primarily Mencía, augmented by small percentages of Garnacha Tintorera and Bastardo. The 2022 version comes in at 13.5 percent octane and delivers a superb bouquet of dark berries, coffee bean, grilled meats, tree bark, sweet stem tones, a fine base of dark soil, woodsmoke and a deft framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, tangy and complex, with a fine core of ripe fruit, very good soil undertow, well-integrated tannins and a long, beautifully balanced and very promising finish.

Floral and fruit-driven on the nose, showing raspberries and blackberries with a delicate lift. The medium- to full-bodied palate has fine-grained, supple tannins and tender red fruit. Sourced 80% from Valtuille, with parcels from El Val and Airola. 100% whole-cluster fermentation. (JGL)

The young 2022 Ultreia Saint Jacques was selected from 10 vineyards, mostly cooler places because of the warmer year. The nose is harmonious and subtle, and it doesn't show any excess ripeness or heat. In fact, it is most impressive. It fermented with 100% full clusters and matured in used oak—barrels and foudres—for 14 months. The palate is medium-bodied, with a juicy texture and very fine tannins. It has a lot of fruit, but with time, it develops more complexity, with notes of fennel and aromatic herbs. There are some 240,000 bottles of this. So, availability should not be a problem. (LG)

Often cited as one of the Spain’s most visionary winemakers, Raúl Pérez pioneered the "New Spain" movement and played a crucial role in highlighting the cool-climate Bierzo region in Northwestern Spain and its signature Mencía grape. The Ultreia St. Jacques is his signature entry-level red, made from a Mencía-dominant field blend that also includes Bastardo (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), Palomino, and Doña Blanca, all from old vines planted between the 1890s and the 1940s across Bierzo. The grapes are fermented in very large open top wooden casks (13000L) and 50-60% whole clusters are included to add floral and spicy notes. Perez also includes a 60-day post-fermentation maceration, followed by aging in neutral oak barrels and puncheons. Perez’s winemaking philosophy is centered on minimal intervention, allowing each vineyard's unique character to express itself with transparency and elegance. The resulting wine is brilliantly fuchsia in color, and juicy, vibrant, and expressive on the palate with crunchy pomegranate and wild blackberry notes, subtle licorice spice, faint lilac, and distinctive minerality. A subtle underlying current of forest floor, fallen leaves and wild herbs ties everything together. This is a wild that perfectly balances wild – almost sauvage – forest notes with elegance, finesse and restraint. Gently reminiscent of a Cru Beaujolais or a Northern Rhône Syrah, this is a wine that showcases another side of Spain – one that is centered around elegance, terroir and quiet power.

This wine has been consistently great from vintage to vintage and this latest release is no exception. It offers delicious dark fruit in a juicy, medium-to full bodied frame with fine underlying tannins and solid acidity. The old vines fruit combined with skilled, low intervention winemaking make this an exceptional red..

Nicely straddling the line between traditional and modern, this release from Raul Perez places itself firmly in the former camp. Without going over the top, of course! Deliciously savory, with nicely done back of the throat (light) chalkiness. After these initial flavors and scents, the fruit takes over. Black cherries, blackberries, dried lavender, smoke and some bright minerals. There is even a floral undercurrent with a few nicely placed red fruit flavors. This wine is always enjoyable and also very affordable!

Notes

Raúl Pérez Pereira is widely regarded as one of the most visionary winemakers in the world, having produced his first vintage for his family’s winery in 1994 at just 22 years old. In 2005, he branched out to establish his own project, Bodegas y Viñedos Raúl Pérez, which quickly became a benchmark for the Bierzo region. Over the years, he has expanded his work to include several other appellations, though his roots remain firmly planted in Valtuille de Abajo — the village in Bierzo where his family has cultivated vines for over three centuries. The Ultreia Saint Jacques is a Mencia-dominant field blend that includes Bastardo (Trousseau), Garnacha Tintorera (Alicante Bouschet), Palomino and Doña Blanca, blended from many different parcels, mostly planted between the 1890s and the 1940s in and around Valtuille de Abajo. The wine is made from 50-60% whole clusters, fermented in 13000L open-top oak vats with a 60-day-plus post-fermentation maceration.
