Comforting aromas of baked cherries and blueberries, accentuated by the sweetness of warmed baking spices define the nose. On the Rounded and velvety in texture, where an abundance of cola notes balances harmoniously with savory and ripe red fruit flavors that all lift with a pop of fresh acidity on the finish. (JP)

Every now and then you come across a wine that reminds you just how diverse and fascinating Piedmont can be, and this is one of them. The 2021 Cascina Alberta "Giacone" is a beautiful, terroir-driven Barbaresco from a small, 5-hectare family estate, but it has a wonderful secret that makes it truly special. Here's the cool part: a significant portion of their vineyards are planted to Nebbiolo Rosé. Now, don't let the name confuse you—this isn't a rosé wine. Nebbiolo Rosé is a rare, historic clone of the Nebbiolo grape, known for its paler color and, most importantly, its incredibly intense aromatics. In a classic, brilliant vintage like 2021, this results in a Barbaresco with a soaring perfume. The nose is an explosion of crushed rose petals, wild strawberry, orange peel, and a hint of white pepper. On the palate, the wine is elegant and precise, with fine, silky tannins and vibrant acidity that carries the bright red fruit to a long, savory finish. It’s less about power and more about aromatic beauty and finesse. For lovers of aromatic, elegant Nebbiolo, this is a fascinating and delicious look into the diversity of the grape. A real insider's wine.

This is a very special Barbaresco that is made from a seldom planted clone of Nebbiolo (Rose) that only a handful of producers work with. It's a bit less tannic than most yet boasts wonderful aromatics. Considering its modest price, this is a rare treat and an incredible value that can be enjoyed today or cellared.

One of the things I love most about Nebbiolo is its remarkable range—how it can express so many facets of character while always remaining unmistakably itself. This gem from Cascina Alberta captures the graceful, elegant side of the grape in the outstanding 2021 Barbaresco vintage, a combination that belies its modest price. The nose is beautifully aromatic, with red florals, blood orange, and bright plum leading the way. On the palate, it’s poised and full of flavor, with bright cherry, candied strawberry, and leather, showing that rare blend of finesse and depth that defines both the 2021 vintage and the skilled touch of the Cascina Alberta team. I have a feeling these exceptional 2021s will vanish before most realize just how good they are—so don’t miss the chance to stock up on Barbarescos of this caliber while you can.

Notes

Cascina Alberta’s 2021 “Giacone” is a beautifully pure and expressive Barbaresco from the esteemed Giacone cru in Treiso. Farmed organically and crafted with a light touch, this wine captures the elegance and aromatic lift of the classic 2021 vintage. The nose is vibrant and fragrant, with notes of red cherry, wild raspberry, and rose petal, accented by hints of anise and crushed stone. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and finely structured, with silky, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity framing a core of pristine red fruit and savory mineral depth. The finish is long, graceful, and transparent. A refined, terroir-driven Barbaresco with both immediate appeal and aging potential.
