A well-crafted, textural and well-driven blend or syrah and mourvedre with aromas of dark cherries, currants, roasted meat, peppercorns and some stones. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. It is well-built, with a solid frame of tannins coating the palate. Dense with dark berries and loads of spices. Plenty of energy and verve with a focused, long and spicy finish. From organically grown grapes. Try from 2025.

The 2022 Ventoux Persia is mostly Syrah and was brought up just like the 2023 and mostly in foudre. Red and black fruits, ground pepper, chalky minerality, and loads of spice define the aromatics, and it's beautifully balanced, medium to full-bodied, has supple, polished tannins, and a great finish.

Being the Rhône buyer, I admit I’m biased when it comes to Syrah from my regions. My focus has long been on the Northern Rhône, where I believe Syrah reaches some of its most complex and intriguing expressions anywhere in the world. Yet in the Southern Rhône—where Grenache usually takes center stage—it’s a treat to find a rendition of Syrah (90% Syrah with a splash of Mourvèdre) that truly stands out. Fondrèche’s Persia comes from some of the estate’s best parcels and oldest vines and captures the depth and character of the Ventoux beautifully. Bold black cherry aromas lead the way, followed by lush notes of crème de mûre. The palate is saturated and full-bodied, framed by supple tannins. Subtle savory tones remind you that this is unmistakably Rhône Syrah, carrying through to a long, complex finish. Vigneron Sébastien Vincenti has long been one of my favorite winemakers in the south, and under his watchful eye, Fondrèche has firmly established itself as one of the benchmark producers of the Ventoux.

Notes

Located in the foothills of Mont Ventoux lies one of the top producers in the Ventoux region of the Rhône - Domaine de Fondrèche. Vigneron Sebastien Vincenti took over the winemaking from his mother in 2005. With an eye toward biodiversity and using organic and biodynamic practices for many years, Fondrèche was recently certified organic in 2022. The winery sits on a plateau comprised of alluvial soils of clay and gravel with a mix of silex (flint) thrown in for good measure.
