Green apples, limes and aromatic herbs on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with a stream of minerals in the center that brings plenty of freshness. Textural and precise. A seductive, well-rounded and delicious blend of grenache, clairette, roussanne and rolle (vermentino). From organically grown grapes.

I’ve long thought that whites from the Southern Rhône have struggled to get the attention they deserve. With the complex whites of Burgundy to the north and the racy Sauvignon Blancs of the Loire claiming most of the spotlight, Southern Rhône whites have too often been overlooked. But I believe their time has come—and Fondrèche’s Blanc might just be the proof. Vigneron Sébastien Vincenti seems to have cracked the code. His Blanc offers all the richness and body I expect from the south, yet it’s lifted by explosive aromatics and a vibrant acidity that refreshes the palate. Stone fruit notes of peach and nectarine are brightened by a twist of Meyer lemon, while a touch of wild fennel on the finish gives a clear sense of place. It’s terroir-driven and expressive, yet completely approachable—a must-have for weeknight drinking.

Notes

Located in the foothills of Mont Ventoux lies one of the top producers in the Ventoux region of the Rhone - Domaine de Fondreche. Vigneron Sebastien Vincenti took over the winemaking from his mother in 2005. With an eye toward biodiversity and using organic and biodynamic practices for many years, Fondreche was recently certified organic in 2022. The winery sits on a plateau comprised of alluvial soils of clay and gravel with a mix of silex (flint) thrown in for good measure. The Blanc comes from the sandier soils on the property. That cooling soil helps preserve the freshness in the wine. Fermentation is done in stainless steel tank with no malolactic. It is aged in concrete tanks for six months before bottling. It is a blend of 30% Grenache Blanc, 30% Roussanne, 30% Clairette, and 10% Rolle.
