2024 Casa d'Ambra "Frassitelli" Ischia Biancolella

2024 Casa d'Ambra "Frassitelli" Ischia Biancolella

If Ischia has a "Grand Cru," this is it. Frassitelli is a single, four-hectare vineyard perched a breathtaking 600 meters above sea level. Viticulture here is defined as "heroic" for a reason: the slopes are so steep that harvest is often done with the aid of a monorail system. This extreme elevation and exposure produce a Biancolella of piercing intensity. The 2024 is electric. It opens with aromas of broom flowers, wild fennel, and crushed stone, followed by a palate that is tense, saline, and vibrating with volcanic energy. It’s not just a white wine; it’s a distillation of the Mediterranean landscape. A true masterpiece of island winemaking.

The 2024 Casa D Ambra Frassitelli Ischia Biancolella is bright, saline, and unmistakably Mediterranean. The nose opens with yellow flowers and notes of Mediterranean scrub, immediately evoking the sea air and island vibes. On the palate, a striking mineral backbone and pronounced salinity drive the wine, giving it energy and precision while staying beautifully refreshing. It’s vibrant, coastal, and expressive. This is my favorite Italian white of 2024 so far!

Biancolella! The first time I tasted it, I couldn’t get the ’80s song “Barbarella” by The Bongos out of my head—only it morphed into “Biancolellaa-ah.” What variety is that? Never heard of it. Who cares. It's amazing. Oooh-oh-oh, Biancolellaa-ah. Think if Pinot Grigio, Grüner Veltliner, and Riesling had a baby; Biancolella would inherit all the best traits, plus high cheekbones and wavy blond hair. The 2024 Casa d’Ambra “Frassitelli” Ischia Biancolella is dry and racy yet generous, bursting with juicy white peach, a pinch of white pepper, sun-dried straw, white blossoms, makrut lime zest, and briny sea mist. It impressed me so much I marched it straight over to our wine buyer’s desk just to say, dude—wow. Bring this to a dinner or gathering and you’ll be the hero: it pairs with everything and everyone, and best of all, no one will argue about it—because no one will know what it is.

Notes

From one of Ischia’s most historic and revered producers, the 2024 Casa d'Ambra “Frassitelli” is a benchmark expression of high-altitude, volcanic Biancolella. Sourced from the island's most famous, steeply-terraced cru, this is a stunningly pure and mineral-driven white. The nose is bright, precise, and intensely aromatic, with notes of lemon zest, green apple, and white flowers, layered over a powerful core of crushed flint, smoke, and a distinct sea-spray salinity. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied, taut, and energetic, with a vibrant, almost electric acidity that frames the pristine citrus and orchard fruit flavors. The finish is exceptionally long, clean, and resonant, echoing with notes of Mediterranean herbs and that unmistakable volcanic, stony quality. A magnificent and singular white that perfectly captures the essence of Ischia’s heroic viticulture.
