Grapes for Steve Matthiasson's Napa Cabernet come from Phoenix Vineyard, an east-facing steep hillside at the base of Mt. Veeder, on a bluff of royally unique ancient marine shale soils overlooking the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley. Additional fruit is sourced from long-term lease contracts farmed by Matthiasson in Coombsville, Oak Knoll, and Rutherford (two sites), one on Mount Veeder and one in Calistoga (in the Franz Valley). There are no additions beyond sulfites. Compact and energetic with super-savoury notes of black olives, sagebrush and dried tobacco, crunchy red currant fruit, and expressive graphite. A firm spine of mouthwatering acidity imbues the wine with serious staying power. In their youth, these wines will not give you much at the pull of the cork but wait six hours or a day or two days even, and oxygen works at them to reveal the effects of ageing as the wine becomes suddenly more open-knit and generous. So, give them 20-30 years, and the fireworks will go off. If you're a collector, stash these away and don't touch them for two decades. For everyone else, decanting is a must, and patience will be rewarded.

Brilliant balance and great concentration give depth and freshness to this beautifully structured, medium-bodied and age-worthy wine. Drought conditions that year kept the grape berries very small, so the skins had more influence on the flavors. Tasty red cherries, blackcurrants and hints of fresh parsley and sage. Drink or hold.

Anyone who craves great, old-school Napa Cabernet, the stuff of legends from the 1970s and 80s, with moderate alcohol, real varietal character, ageability, and a food friendly structure...this is it! What's really awesome about this wine is that Steve sources the fruit from a tapestry of top notch vineyards he farms up and down the valley. Each one meticulously farmed with organic practices for quality over quantity. The wine is full of briary red fruits, mulberry, red currant, camphor, tobacco, leather and savory, dust earth components. The wine is lithe and and focused, much more reminiscent of traditionally made left bank Bordeaux than most modern Napa Cabs. If you enjoy wines of this style you have to check this out. Our recent staff visit to Matthiasson reinforced in my mind just how great Steve's wines are and how they represent a style that is still possible in Napa so long as you champion restraint and elegance over richness and brut force.

The 2021 Matthiasson Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon draws on eight diverse vineyard sites—from the cool volcanic slopes of Coombsville to the gravelly alluvium of Rutherford and the rugged heights of Mt. Veeder—each contributing its own dimension of character. The blend marries flavor and structure with nuance and aromatic lift, a beautiful snapshot of Napa’s varied terroirs. Cassis, tart cherry and plum are layered with hints of graphite and savory herbs, supported by firm tannins and a long, mineral-driven finish. Food-friendly acidy makes it ideal for the table. If you're planning on drinking it now, be sure to decant first. It's composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 1% Merlot, and 1% Cabernet Franc that aged 20 months in mostly used French oak, with less than 20% new barrels. Beautifully rendered at 12.5% ABV and CCOF organic certified, it’s as conscientious as it is compelling.

The slightly savory nose on this release has red fruits (currant and cranberry), light leather and tobacco, savory herbs. On the palate, nicely chewy, with dark (and tart) cherry fruit, a generous dose of minerals and additional savory herbs (rosemary, thyme). I tasted this at 9 a.m. on a hillside in the vineyard. we tasted it shortly thereafter it was opened and again when we returned from a short hike. The additional aeration brought the fruit more forward and the black cherry fruit came through with some very nice cocoa powder and cedary wood flavors. Like all of the Matthiasson wines, the alcohol levels here are those of the past. That is, under 14.5! A mere 12.5 means that I can have TWO glasses!
