2020 Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino
97
James Suckling
Review Date: 09/2024Restrained strawberries and cherries, with a touch of lavender and a lot of licorice. Super juicy on the palate with thick, chalky tannins at the moment, yet they are balanced by supple, sweet fruit. Medium- to full-bodied with a very savory aftertaste. Though pleasant, it’s not fully ready to drink now, and there’s a lot of potential for the long haul.

Notes
Poggio di Sotto remains a benchmark for elegance and purity in Montalcino, and the 2020 vintage reaffirms its iconic status. Sourced from organically farmed vineyards in Castelnuovo dell’Abate at high elevation, this Brunello benefits from optimal diurnal shifts that preserve freshness and aromatic complexity. Fermentation occurs in open-top oak casks with native yeasts, followed by long aging in large Slavonian oak botti. The 2020 offers a soaring bouquet of rose petals, red cherry, wild herbs, and sweet spice. The palate is refined and graceful, with silky tannins and vibrant acidity carrying a long, ethereal finish. A classic expression of Sangiovese that will evolve beautifully over the next 20–30 years.
