Perfumed, with subtle cherry, cranberry and strawberry aromas and a hint of peaches. Medium-bodied with brightness and freshness. Vivid, lively, crunchy and fresh. Always excellent and super drinkable. Drink or hold.

Barda is Chacra’s biggest volume red, made with fruit from different parcels totalling 25 hectares. Fermented with 15% whole bunches, it’s sappy, focused and refreshing, with a hint of aromatic spices from 5% new wood, redcurrant and pink grapefruit acidity, succulent tannins and a core of red cherry and wild strawberry. Vibrant and refreshing with an earthy undertone.

Sourced from younger plantings at the estate with declassifications from the upper-level bottlings, the 2024 Barda is a pitch-perfect introduction to the Chacra range. It leads with a radiantly floral and red-fruited bouquet supported by smoky, earth-tinged accents while sacrificing no purity. The palate is silky and suave, smoothly flowing into a balanced, persistent finish. It fermented with 15% whole clusters and matured in equal parts cement amphora and barrique, of which 10% was new. The entry point to Chacra’s Pinot universe, Barda sets the scene for what is to come and the 2024 vintage is the brightest yet, bursting with fresh red cherry, rose petal and dried raspberry. A subtle, saline mineral edge and hint of wild rosemary lend complexity. Crunchy, energetic and thoroughly enjoyable. (AB)

The 2024 Bodega Chacra “Barda” Pinot Noir is an approachable, food-friendly expression of Patagonian Pinot. Bright notes of cranberry, wild strawberry, and hibiscus weave together with subtle undertones of baking spices and a freshly rolled cigar. The palate is supple yet energetic, carrying its fruit with effortless grace and a whisper of savoriness. It’s a versatile Pinot that would elevate a quiet dinner at home with a roast chicken or serve alongside a more refined meal. It's unpretentious, elegant, and simply delicious.

The fruit is creamy on the nose, and typically with Pinot Noir that introduces an amount of barrel into the equation, but I might be getting ahead of myself. Lots of pretty cherry, a little bit of ripe strawberry, and then some dried herbs on the finish along with touches of toast. The palate is really light and pretty, before the tannins come in and give it a firm little grip, nothing you cannot mitigate with a little food or a little bit of aging. The fruited core is really lovely, very red with these little hints at black fruit around the very edges, definitely some oak but nothing that overwhelms the wine. All in all this is really well made and delicious, something I would absolutely visit again. Definitely recommend a bit of air, it was much better in the evening than when we first popped the bottle.

Notes

Chacra was created by Piero Incisa della Rocchetta (grandson of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, who founded Sassicaia) in 2004. Piero is a Burgundy enthusiast, and limited by the constraints of what can be legally produced in Tuscany, searched the world for the ideal place to grow cool climate Pinot Noir. Produced from Chacra’s youngest vineyards, Barda was conceived to be consumed while still fresh and young. Its alcohol percentage is generally low – 12 to 13 percent. The vineyards, planted in 1990, grow on slightly sandy soils and are ungrafted. The wine is fermented at low temperatures in round cement tanks, with natural and unfiltered indigenous yeasts. 50% of the wine is aged in concrete tanks, and 50% iis aged n French oak barrels (15% new) for 11 months
