On the palate, this shows pears, white peaches and some flowers. Medium-bodied with silky texture, a delicious white-fruit character and a flavorful finish. A fresh and airy blend of 90% roussanne, 5% marsanne and 5% vermentino.

One of the most overlooked white wine categories in France is the Rhône. Compared to its reds, the region produces a much smaller proportion of white wines, and their flavor profiles can sometimes feel confounding. Rather than relying on the familiar comfort of Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc, Rhône whites are built from a multitude of varieties—Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier, and others—each bringing a different layer of character. It’s time to re-examine these wines, and one of the best discoveries of the past year comes from house favorite Mas de Sainte Croix. Their Délicatesse is predominantly Roussanne, usually with a small splash of Marsanne. Subtle notes of peach, persimmon, and a hint of beeswax shape a medium-plus-bodied wine with a lovely, gently oily texture. It’s not heavy, but it is deeply satisfying on the palate. This is an ideal partner for roast chicken, grilled halibut, or pan-seared sole finished in butter. However you pour it, Délicatesse is a fantastic addition to any weeknight wine rotation.

Notes

Jacques Coipel worked in the petrol industry until 2002 when he decided to change career paths and enter the wine business. He purchased an exceptional site in the Cotes du Rhone Village Cru of Valreas. His vineyards sit at around 1200 feet with a mix of clay, limestone and gravel making up the soils. With cooling winds from the north and at this higher altitude, there is a crispness to the wines showing more red fruit qualities in the reds and more vibrant apple tones in the whites. Around the same time Jacques's son, Julien, began studying winemaking working in Switzerland and New Zealand (with Te Mata, one of our favorites). Julien returned to Ste. Croix in 2010 and began working on the wine with his father. Julien's lighter but technical touch makes for wines that are great expressions of the Valreas terroir. This is Roussanne (sometimes a splash of Marsanne) from vines planted between 350-400 meters on calcareous rocky soils. All fermentation and aging is done in tank.
