There’s extraordinary energy in this wine. It displays a dark nose of black cherries, bramble fruit, violets, forest, licorice, bark, carob and leather. Density and tension dominate the full-bodied palate, with firm, velvety tannins. It’s slightly austere in the finish at the moment, yet it’s crunchy and full of potential. Try from 2026.

ignanello is one of Tuscany’s most iconic wines and the 2022 doesn’t disappoint, starting with its captivating aromas of fragrant purple flower, cake spice, camphor and ripe plum. A blend of mainly Sangiovese with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the smooth, utterly delicious and elegantly structured palate delivers succulent black cherry, cassis, vanilla, mocha and graphite alongside well-integrated, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity lifts the rich flavors. (KO)

The 2022 Tignanello is such an elegant, poised wine. Brisk acids cut through a core of red Sangiovese fruit. Crushed flowers, mint, cinnamon, rose petal and a kiss of French oak appear later, adding notable brightness. The 2022 is a decidedly mid-weight Tignanello, but all the elements are very nicely balanced throughout. Tignanello saw rain episodes at the end of the season, like most properties, but steep, well-draining hillsides were a clear advantage. The blend is 78% Sangiovese, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Cabernet Franc, essentially the classic proportions here. (EG)

The rich texture wraps around plum, cherry, graphite, tobacco and earth flavors, with a line of dusty tannins underneath. Fresh, elegant and long, ending with a pleasant astringency. Give this a year or two to integrate. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. (BS)

Tasting the 2022 vintage of Tignanello was a powerful reminder of why this wine remains the undisputed benchmark for the Super Tuscan category. If the 2021 was a celebration of balance, the 2022 is a triumph of terroir over the elements. In a vintage characterized by intense heat, Tignanello didn’t just survive; it thrived, proving once again that Marchesi Antinori understands this hillside better than anyone else. From the moment it hit the glass, the wine displayed a darker, more brooding personality than its predecessor. The color is an intense ruby, almost purple at the rim. The nose is incredibly expressive and surprisingly fresh given the warm year—bursting with ripe black cherries, bramble fruit, and blood orange, layered with complex notes of violet and a distinct graphite minerality that speaks to the limestone soils of the Tignanello vineyard. The tannins are velvety and satiny, wrapping around a core of savory fruit and sweet spice. The finish is exceptionally long, polished, and precise.

Notes

The 2022 vintage of Tignanello continues the legacy of one of Italy’s most iconic wines. A blend of Sangiovese with a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, it showcases the balance between tradition and innovation that defines the Antinori estate. Grown on the marl-rich soils of the Tignanello vineyard in Chianti Classico, the wine is aged in French and Hungarian oak barriques. The 2022 reveals aromas of ripe black cherry, cassis, violet, and subtle spice. On the palate, it’s rich yet vibrant, with polished tannins and a long, layered finish marked by tobacco, graphite, and sweet herbs. A powerful yet graceful expression of the Tuscan hills.
