2022 Bartolo Mascarello Langhe Nebbiolo
93
Decanter
Review Date: 11/2024Made from purchased fruit from the township of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, this could easily be mistaken for a Barbaresco in 2022. Despite being midweight, there is perceptible density and substance. Pretty raspberry, cherry and violet build with intensity, bringing in hazelnut and citrussy herbs. Chalky minerals fuse into the long, suede-like tannins. Approachable now – but not an easygoing Langhe Nebbiolo. As the vintage yielded small berries with thick skins, the wine was given a brief post-fermentation maceration for a total of 13 days of skin contact. (MM)

Notes
From one of the most iconic and revered traditionalist estates in Barolo, the 2022 Bartolo Mascarello Langhe Nebbiolo is a wine of exceptional pedigree and purity. Sourced from the estate's younger vines in top crus, this is far from a simple Nebbiolo. The nose is hauntingly pure and aromatic, with notes of sour cherry, rose petal, and crushed raspberry, accented by hints of anise, tar, and fresh earth. On the palate, it’s medium-bodied and beautifully transparent, with a firm, classic tannic structure and vibrant acidity that frames the pristine red fruit. The finish is long, savory, and mineral-driven. While approachable now with a decant, this is a serious wine with the potential to age gracefully.
