2020 Cappellano "Piè Rupestris" Barolo
VN
Vinous
Review Date: 11/2023The 2020 Barolo Rupestris is an elegant, sculpted wine. It shows the mid-weight structure of the year nicely. Sweet red cherry fruit, mint, chalk, white pepper, orange peel and dried flowers open with some coaxing. I would leave this alone in the cellar for a few years, as time in bottle is essential here. I won't be surprised if this fills out a bit over the coming years, as is often the case here. Many years ago Baldo Cappellano asked me not to score his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.

Notes
The “Piè Rupestris” by Cappellano is a benchmark Barolo crafted from ungrafted vines in the Gabutti cru of Serralunga d’Alba. This historic site, farmed with extreme care by the Cappellano family, produces a wine that bridges old-school rusticity with haunting elegance. Fermented with extended maceration and aged in large Slavonian casks, the 2020 shows its lineage with aromas of dried cherry, mint, crushed roses, iron, and truffle. On the palate, it’s deep and savory, with firm tannins and a long, ferrous finish. This is soulful, uncompromising Barolo with aging potential measured in decades. Not rated by critics, as per the wishes of the late Teobaldo Cappellano, who famously banned scores.
