2024 Anonymous Wine Collective Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

K&L Buyer
Review Date: 08/2025

The next incredibly exciting release in our Anonymous Wine Collective series is a beautiful Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. This collaboration between K&L and the winery dates back to well beyond the creation of our Anonymous label. This wine has existed in a previous life under our long running Kalinda house label! I'm very excited to expand this relationship into the Anonymous range as it's a true privilege to work with this highly renowned winery. Founded in the early 1990s, this winery is truly and icon in the production of Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Known for their elegant, complex, Burgundian inspired winemaking, this winery produces highly collectible wines only available via the mailing list, auctions, and high-end restaurants. Their most recent set of releases were scored in the 96 to 99 point range by The Wine Advocate, Jeb Dunnuck, and Antonio Galloni's Vinous. I was lucky enough, once again this year to visit the winery, taste from barrels, and put together our cuvee. The Anonymous bottling is very in keeping with the winery's style, elegant, finessed, bright lifted fruit, lovely floral and savory earthy components. It's not a big, ripe wine, it's a wine that is about capturing the sensual, refined, layered, subtle complexities of cool-climate Pinot Noir. Bottle in July, this wine is already very expressive and aromatic. I think it will continue to gain depth and complexity over the coming months and years and will no doubt be a lovely 4-6 year wine, and likely continue to age well though 8-10 years and beyond. For folks who enjoy Burgundy and more graceful expressions of new world Pinot Noir this is a real treat!

This is some next level Pinot Noir and it shows. Pristine raspberry fruit is surrounded by sweet cherry, a touch of rhubarb and baking spices. Sweet but present tannins lets you know this is serious and means what it says. Yes, it may say Anonymous but you definitely will not forget the quality when you taste it. Serious stuff!

As someone notoriously picky about pinot, I can safely say this is the best deal I've encountered in a long while. Juicy cran-raspberry, fresh mountain herbs, and pink peppercorn make an immediate and compelling first impression. The seamless texture, perfectly poised acidity and fine-grain tannin make every sip a joy. The lip-smacking finish brings savory earth and a slight bitterness that is incredibly refreshing. All in all, this is the epitome of Anderson pinot- the complete package. Perfect for those craving elegance and freshness over intensely ripe fruit, it provides endless food pairing possibilities, but I find myself craving porchetta as I contemplate pouring another glass. Anonymous knocked it out of the park again.

Pale, bordering on an almost translucent ruby color with a slight purple hue. Sweet fruits jump out of the glass - ripe raspberry, cranberry and tart cherry are immediately in the foreground, followed by layers of vanilla and cinnamon, with a hint of cedar. There are some earthy notes, but not as much as I'd expect from an Andeson Valley Pinot Noir, some prominent licorice and truffle notes that work harmoniously with the violet floral note. The palate is juicy, but very light in body. The acid is high, but not searingly so. The tannins, though slight, still have some grip, so this wine, though very drinkable now, could benefit from some bottle aging.

Notes

The Anonymous Wine Collective is a dynamic range of wines made in collaboration between K&L and some of the most famous and critically acclaimed wineries in the country. Some releases will be purely opportunistic, one-off wines, never to be repeated. Others will be ongoing collaborations where we work in tandem with world-class winemakers to make wines each year. This wine in particular is a partnership that was forged many years ago under our Kalinda label. We have now doubled down on the relationship, working each year to create a custom barrel blend to be bottled exclusively under Anonymous. This wine comes from one of the most highly regarded producers of Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. The wines are typically only available on the winery's mailing list or in top restaurants around the country. We're ecstatic to continue this long relationship and positive that this wine provides exceptional quality and value for money to our customers. (Ryan Woodhouse - K&L Domestic Wine Buyer)
