2023 Domaine Delhome "Alt 330" Crozes-Hermitage Rouge

Review Date: 02/2026From the Larnage region of this larger appellation, all destemmed and aged mostly in used barrels with just 10% new, the 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Alt. 330 sports a deep ruby hue as well as an impressive nose of ripe red and black berries, peppery herbs, violets, baking spices, and some cured meat-like nuances. It's a rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated Crozes with ripe, integrated tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. I think it's the clear standout in the lineup here, and while I love it today, I wouldn't be surprised to see it gain complexity with 2-4 years of bottle age and shine over the following decade or more. It's an impressive Crozes Hermitage that I think is even better than the 2022, which is another brilliant wine from this estate.

Notes
Domaine Delhome is a fifth-generation family estate rooted in the village of Larnage, at the northern edge of Crozes-Hermitage. Long devoted to grape growing, the Delhomes sold their fruit to the Cave de Tain until 2019, when Gérald and his son Romain built their own winery and began bottling under their own name. Their 10 hectares, divided into 20 parcels between 120 and 330 meters in elevation, sit on the cooler, more boreal side of the appellation - the historic heart of Crozes-Hermitage. Their parcels range across a complex mosaic of clay-limestone, loess, kaolin-rich white clays, and stony granitic slopes, The Alt 330 comes from vines over 70 years of age, planted on the kaolin soils of the region aka the "Terre Blanche of Larnage." Aging is all in oak for 12 months. This shows the regions vibrant rich fruit character that makes up this very special terroir.
