Vinous

Rosy florals and hints of autumnal spice give way to crushed wild strawberries and lavender as the 2022 Etna Rosso Vinupetra blossoms in the glass. It opens with a balanced inner sweetness, casting inner violet tones across the palate atop a core of citrus-laced blackberries. Juicy acidity maintains fantastic energy as the 2022 tapers off long and gently tannic, leaving a tinge of licorice on the finish. Fantastic. (EG)

Vinupetra is a prized parcel in the Calderara Sottana contrada, home to some of Etna’s oldest vines. Fermented with native yeasts and aged in tonneaux, it offers layered aromatics of sour cherry, blood orange, smoke, and incense. Firmly structured yet harmonious, with a long, mineral-laced finish. A serious, cellar-worthy red from a master of Mount Etna.

Notes

The I Vigneri di Salvo Foti "Vinupetra" Etna Rosso is a distinguished red wine from the slopes of Mount Etna, produced by the renowned winemaker Salvo Foti and his team at I Vigneri, a collective focused on reviving and maintaining the traditional winemaking practices of Sicily's volcanic region. The wine comes from ancient bush-trained vines, some over 100 years old, planted at 700 meters above sea level in the village of Castiglione di Sicilia. The soils here are rich in volcanic ash and minerals, imparting a distinct character to the wine. Made primarily from Nerello Mascalese and a smaller percentage of Nerello Cappuccio, Vinupetra offers a complex bouquet of red fruits, spices, and earthy undertones, with subtle hints of wild herbs. On the palate, it is elegant and structured, showcasing fine tannins, lively acidity, and a distinctive mineral finish that echoes the volcanic terroir. This wine pairs beautifully with grilled meats, game dishes, or aged cheeses, offering a true expression of Etna's unique terroir and Salvo Foti's commitment to preserving the island’s ancient winemaking traditions through sustainable and traditional practices.
