Chardonnay prevails in the 2023 Crémant De Limoux Eugénie Extra Brut Blanc, a blend of complemented by 20% Chenin Blanc and 10% Mauzac. Using the traditional method, the wine first spent six months on fine lees before being bottled for the second fermentation, then spending a further 24 months on laths before disgorging. From the outset, this very delicately sparkling wine opens with a lemony bouquet of peach skin, lemon zest, candied nectarines, and a hint of honey. It's a straightforward crémant, delicately expressive, precise, and very long, with a fine bitterness and spicy notes on the finish. With very little dosage, it's more than an aperitif bubbly and could just as easily be served at the table to accompany a meal. (Now forgotten, this used to be done a lot.) (BJ)

Long one of my favorite daily drinkers, Antech has recently begun receiving the critical acclaim it has long deserved. The wines of Françoise and Baptiste Antech-Gazeau have been a staple at K&L for nearly two decades, and they have consistently over-delivered for their price point. A perennial favorite is the Eugénie, which was recently reclassified as Extra Brut—a change that, for me, marked a major turning point. As ripeness levels in the region continue to climb with climate change, lowering the dosage has kept the wines balanced, focused, and—if anything—even more elevated in character. Spiced apple and pear lead the profile, accented by a hint of ginger. It is an effortlessly charming wine, and still sub-$20—making it one of the most difficult bottles to beat in the category.

Composed of 70% Chardonnay, 20% Chenin Blanc, and 10% Mauzac, the 2023 Antech "Cuvée Eugénie" Extra Brut Crémant de Limoux aged 18 months on its lees and was finished with a 5 g/L dosage. It’s another fine example from Antech, offering delightful bubbles for times when you don't want to feel like you're on a tight budget. You can suspend your disbelief with this one, thinking that you paid much more for it than you actually did. Notes of crunchy pear, ripe green apple, and sourdough toast carry a touch of honeyed flavor without the sweetness. Dry, crisp, thirst-quenching and civilized, it would be equally at home at a garden party, a family gathering, or a relaxed Wednesday night with a cat or two and a good movie.

This is the kind of bottle that makes a strong case for skipping Champagne without feeling like a compromise. The nose leans properly yeasty, think fresh bread and a touch of brioche, with a pop of citrus zest that keeps it lifted. On the palate, it snaps into focus. There is a strong mineral background here, stony and almost saline, pushing everything forward. Citrus and green apple keep it bright, the mousse is tight and energetic, and the extra brut finish lands bone dry and clean. It all feels intentional. No fluff. The value is the kicker. This drinks with more structure and character than the price suggests. Mineral, a little savory, and easy to keep going back without overthinking it.

Notes

Cuvée Eugenie is a vintage Crémant de Limoux composed of 70% Chardonnay and 30% Chenin. It is hand harvested and made in the traditional method, spending a minimum of 18 months on the lees. This vibrant bubbly captures the sunshine and energy of Southern France while coming in at a price that other sparklers can't touch. It's now produced as an Extra Brut style with less than 5 g/L of residual sugar.
