2023 Domaine Jessiaume Beaune 1er Cru "Cent Vignes"

Decanter
Review Date: 01/2025The lovely Cent Vignes from Jessiaume offers a medium-deep ruby colour and a moderate concentration of plum and blackberry fruit aromas, with hints of violets and spice. On the palate, there is more ripeness and a very elegant texture that is airy but still substantial, with firm tannins yet no astringency. The old-vine fruit from this 1.16ha parcel is fermented one-third as whole clusters with a very gentle extraction – no punching down, just pumping over, and a modified rack and return.(CC)

Coming from a generous 1.16 ha, these 60- to 70-year-old vines reacted viscerally to the vintage, according to winemaker William Waterkeyn. Despite this, they produced as consistently as they usually do at about 40 hl/ha. The resulting wine has a bright nose of crunchy red fruits on display, backed up by integrated oak toast, crusty tannins and ample red fruit vinosity. This shows off both terroir and smart winemaking.

Mid ruby to crimson. The nose is not demonstrative but suggests elegance nonetheless. This fills the mouth very nicely, never insistent, slightly darker berry notes than most of the Jessiaume 2023s, with a balanced structure and good length. Drink from 2027-2031. Tasted Oct 2024.

The 2023 Beaune Les Cents Vignes 1er Cru has an aromatic, floral bouquet with pressed rose petal scents infusing the vibrant red fruit. This has admirable purity and mineralité. The palate is well balanced with a little more weight and muscle on the entry than expected. It is a front-loaded Beaune that tails off a little toward the peppery finish.(NM)
