Glowing purple. This is delightful on the nose even if I don’t yet see the majesty of the vineyard. Plenty of detail on the nose, on the cusp of red and black, plus a little pepper. The same classy character shows through on the palate, though with rather more dark fruit, including blackcurrant at the finish. The tannins are very refined, so as to be barely noticeable. An accessible Clos de Bèze for the medium term. Drink from 2031-2038. Tasted Dec 2024.

Note: from a .44 ha parcel with vines that were originally planted in 1904 though there has been a significant amount of replanting since. A dollop of wood frames the spicy red and dark currant scents where more aromatic breadth is present in the form of Asian-style tea and violet wisps. There is a lovely sense of energy to the focused middle weight flavors that possess solid if not exceptional depth and persistence on the balanced if very firm finale. This is however quite classy and I particularly like the mid-palate texture.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "Less weight of aroma after the BM – but what a beautiful, inviting aroma. A calmer wine, of less volume but here is lithe muscle. The finish of elegance and a little of the stems – rather than the barrel. Smaller in scale but more in place today than BM."(02/2025)
